can we describe what we like in music?
    #8405124 - 05/15/08 12:22 PM

I really dislike the current quo of categorizing music and naming "genres" when asked what music we like. Can we describe in general terms what we enjoy about music? It isn't easy. The only obvious thing for me is great lyrics - lyrics that continually amaze. I guess my question is: what turns you on musically?

But genres describe what I like in music without me having to spell it all out.
It's easier to say I like jazz than "I like songs with swung eight notes, a certain type of chord progression, maybe some 12 bar blues, lots of improvisational sections, sax, trumpet, piano, bass, drums, and a few other instruments in any sort of variation." I could go on and on, but why do that? I like jazz.

but u don't like all jazz, do you? I don't find terms like "acid jazz" or "mellow jazz" or even just "jazz" really go far enough to describe (a) my tastes and (b) my own music. trip-funk is usually the genre I specify in mp3 tags, but even with my own genre I don't really like categorizing my music as that. any good artist that varies enough in his or her stylings so as not to go stale will create songs in multiple "genres"...

Do you like all music with good lyrics? I highly doubt it. In fact, I don't like all music with swung eighth notes, certain chord progressions, improvisation, an arrangement of instruments I like.

As unfair as placing genres on music can be, it's essential in explaining and presenting new music to others. We need abstraction. Just how our minds work.

What do I like about music? God...a million different things! Most of all, I like the way it makes me think. It helps ease my thoughts out of me when I'm writing, keeps me inspired when I'm drawing, makes everyone more comfortable at a party, gets me on the dance floor, reminds me of another time and place, lets me know I'm not the only one who feels this way about this experience....it goes on and on.

Music is good.

progressiveness. I like music to change and surprise me. I like rhythm in music as well: metric modulation, polyrhythm's and such. I find that anything that sounds like it has genuine emotion or thought in it is enjoyable as well.

I am usually turned off by lyrics.

I would say I really enjoy the lyrics to about 5% of the music I hear.
why? because 95% of the time, it is some self absorbed rant about how unfair life is, or a string of cliches that ultimately leave you with some vague sense of longing for someone else.
I like lyrical content that is a narrative... like the monkey and the engineer by the grateful dead... otherwise it has to be comical or satirical like zappa.

but if it is first person... I could care less. The lyrics become landmines in a field.
I would say that the majority of the music i listen to is instrumental. I just find the difference to be like reading a book, and watching the movie of that book.
I detest the 3 chord strumming while you tell me about your lackluster libido and failures at love.

I like anything that sounds epic. I like it when music makes me imagine of far away lands and life threatening situations ranging from war to self destructive delerium.

I think the majority of people listen to music incorrectly. often, people tell me that aphex twin gives them anxiety, or mr bungle scares them like evil clowns or something.
but that is what art is... an abstract or tangible thing that evoke strong emotion through mere experience/perceiving.
that includes horror, disgust, anxiety, etc...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5657720/page/0/fpart/2/vc/1

that is a very long thread about art appreciation, but I think it makes a good point.

Good call on lyrics- I've never been able to put my finger on it, but you said it well about cliches, narratives, etc.

The other night, I was listening to something, don't remember what kind of music, but the best way I could describe what I like was that a certain 'definitive' aspect of a genre, like a really hard-edged hook in cuban music, or a really great blues harp phrase, or a good synth line in some electronic stuff...certain things that really grab ya.

I think that's why I don't really have that great of a music collection...with a few exceptions, I don't really listen to the same stuff over and over. I'm always looking for the New, be it klezmer, reggae, jazz, tango, trance, or whatever. Something to tickle that hard to hit spot in the brain.

I really like the music because of the lyrics, as well. Songs that describe real life struggles and taboos that shouldn't be, being open minded, and etc. There's many reason why I like music, but the lyrics stand out the most. For instance, A couple of artist called Karmina have a song called "the Kiss" it talks about the struggles that are similar to Romeo and Juliet. And how culture criticizes other culture being ethnocentric.

I have to disagree OP, just describe the music you like as if you were describing what a good friend is to you.

Laid back at times, yet brimming with energy, full impact with a smooth digression, original without pushing for it, spontaneous, optimistic, daring, playful. A balance between the poignantly brassy kick-you-in-the-face and sophisticated, sentimental melody is important to me. What is said takes the back seat to what is done, lyrics need not be profound or persuading. Querky is good, I'm not a fan of plastic. Humility is a big one, I expect an artist to approach me as an equal - don't get high on what you create.
