bubble wands & Air pump
    #8409719 - 05/16/08 02:25 PM (4 months, 24 days ago)

Ive got a 20 gallon rubbermaid container using the Perlite on the bottom to create humidity. Ive also got a regular A/C filter on top of that vs. Wire Mesh. "Im not a fan of Chicken Wire" I find it hard to work with unless you have a garage and good cutting tools.

Right now Im just fanning them about two or three times a day but am thinking about fitting it with an air pump & Bubble wand. Can I just lay the bubble wand on the A/C filter next to my cakes or does it need to be submerged under water?? A little more humidity would be nice but Im more concerned about the air exchange.

You are using an A/C filter as a lid for your FC?

Actually I've got the Perlite layer with Water, then the A/C Filter. My cakes are sitting on that. It's not as stable as Wire Mesh but you can cut it to size which was nice and it does have wire on one side of the filter that helps support it. Then of course I've got the regular lid on top of the FC.

I just picked up a bubble wand so I figure that I'll put some sort of dish in there full of water and set it on the A/C Filter or maybe remove it completely. The Bubble wand has a handy dandy suction cup.

What do most people do? Submerge the Bubble wand in the Perlite/Water on the bottom?

perlite sitting in water doesn't do shit.

perlite alone is good for 99% rh.

when/if I do pf cakes again I'll use a breeders grate used for breeding fish, can sit right on the perlite and its fine -- cakes can sit on that. I like it more than using jar lids or foil.

I thought id be a hardcore cake maker so I bought enough for 20 bins and it cost 35$ for the 20 i believe.

if your doing the shotgun box with the holes all over the 6 sides, you dont need an air bubble wand. you just need to fan the box out a few times a day

mtn:
you DONT want water Pooling in the FC.. The perlite wont do its job if its covered in water, And you make a bigger risk of growing contams in your FC.

WET the Perlite, let The Majority of the Water Drain out.. then the perlite will be working @ its full potential.. if its covered in water, it wont work at all.

EDIT:
As for FAE(Fresh air exchange) if you think you might not be able to fan it as much as it needs.. Go to Walmart, the Fish Section, and buy an Air Pump for $10.00..
i got an Air blower with 2 connections, so i put a hose on each side of my FC..

Right on, thanks for the advice. I think i'll remove the A/C filter and then put a bubble wand on the bottom of the FC covered up by perlite and water mix??? It sounds like I have tad bit too much water in the mix of the perlite so I'll add just a bit to even it out. I could use another inch or so. Thanx for the guidance here.

After doing research through the postings I can see that everyone has their own little methods. Some swear by the airpump and others say,,, yeah whatever.....

Bubble Wands and perlite rock. Click the tab under my avatar, and look at my old setup. I moved and had to throw it away. I am still kicking myself for it.

so if you get a bubble wand you dont have to fan as long as you have holes in the box?

Thanks for all the help! I made some mods to my FC. I was able to track down a humidity gauge in the reptile department at the pet store. I took out the A/C filter and dumped all the old perlite and put new in. I just put a bit of water in the perlite. No water is really standing like it was last time. I guess the perlite sucked it all up! That's the way to have it right??

I put the bubble wand right in the middle of the FC and have a nice air tight hole with a hose running to it. The bubble wand is surrounded by perlite and no water. I assume it's pushing air out into the FC. Should the Bubble wand be submerged by the Perlite or should it be nestled in between perlite and no covered?

I also upgraded my lighting system because I've been having issues with pinning. I think I'm on the money now with the light!! The Pet Store where I lived had a bomb diggity flourescent bulb!! It's a Power Glo with a very high Blue Spectrum and replica sunlight as well! www.hagen.com Look up the Power Glo 18' inch. Give me some feedback.

I'm at about 89% humidity. I still plan on fanning once or twice a day with the pump set up but I'd like to pull another 5% humidity out a magic hat somewhere!

I always put the wand under the perlite. Everyone once in a while it will kind of block the airflow, because all of the tiny perlite particles get into the wand holes, but just jiggle it around and the air will start flowing good again. Make sure you have plenty of perlite, and mist the sides of the FC. Try to keep the lid on as much as possible. You should only LIGHTLY fan twice per day, that will maintain that RH. Remember, when you fan, you are simply tring to displace the layer of CO2 in the bottom and it doesn't take much. Some people drill small holes in the bottom of their FC, and don't fan at all. CO2 is generally heavy than fresh air, and it will naturally go out through the bottom holes.

Awesome and thanks! Sounds like I'm on the path to righteousness!! Back in the day all we had was styrofoam or plastic igloo coolers to choose from! Now they got all these cool Rubbermaid Products! Luv it! It's much easier now with the right guidance!

Holesnype, I clicked on your link to see your old setup but couldn't get to it? No worries. Thanx,,,

d00d???

did i read that wrong, or did you say you have no water in your perlite now???

the purpose of the bubble wand is to airate and circulate the water thru the perlite which then wicks the water into the air causing the humidity...

if you have perlite in an FC without a million tiny holes drilled in the plastic(shotgun FC) then you NEED water in with the perlite.

heres a Link...this i think will help you...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1303334#Post1303334

add some h202 in with your water(hydrogen peroxide) and continue fanning and misting...

guys, if he has water sitting in his FC, he obviously isnt using the Shotgun FC...

so give him MORE information...now he has a dry ass box.

Mtn:

-if youre FC is hole-less, use the bubble wands and perlite with water in it

-if your FC is the "Shotgun FC" then obviously water wont sit in it, and all you need to do is thouroughly rinse your perlite and put it in the FC

with both of these tho, continue with your fanning and misting

....and your extra 5-10% rh will come if you do either one of these properly and research a little. know that these mushrooms like it AS HUMID AS POSSIBLE, and think to yourself, is dry perlite and a bubble wand is gonna produce anything but dry air...

No Shotgun FC. I just have Perlite w/Water poured over it. Last time I had standing water in the bottom of my FC w/ the Perlite and I hear that submerging the perlite w/ water is not the way to go because it's no longer effective. My bubble wand has no contact with water. It' just surrounded by damp Perlite. So maybe I need to add more water? I feel comfortable with just having Damp Perlite vs. what I had last time.
