There are more than 400 species in the genus Cordyceps, but Cordyceps militaris has the highest content of nutritional components and bioactive constituents.
The efficacy of the fruitbody is better than mycelium products on the market, also buying the whole fruitbody lets you know your getting the real deal.
Your carbon to nitrogen ratio should be between 5-25 to 1

I always wanted to try to grow these. I was more interested in the headlike cordyceps....that grows on a supposed aphrodisiac.... Is the substrate ground insect or somesuch? Militaris is the one that infects insect larva isn't it?

Cool... If that is the headlike coryceps, it is reputed to have been used as a "divination aid" to certain tribal peoples. I ate enough to get a bit of an odd feel....See if you can cultivate more. Might be hard since it has such an odd preferred medium (underground aphrodisiac fungus). I tried trading on back in the late 90s, but trying to keep it alive in the mail didn't turn out so well.

I was reading the article Juke posted and saw this in the substrate section:
"With the addition of certain growth triggering compounds to this mixture, Cordyceps sinensis is easily induced to fruit in culture without any insect material being present."
What do you think, the growth triggering compounds are? Pretty complete article to leave that out, maybe its protected by patent or something.
