I don't think any kind of behavior can prove or disprove conciousness. A being could be concious without having any free will. Even humans could be seen to not have free will. It could be said that we are just following a mapped out path which we have no control over. We are just in for the ride. A monkey could be just as concious as we are, but the program they are following is a little less complex on one level.
