beginner vegetarian

this is my second day on this vegetarian venture. my stomach is aching and my head hurts. i have eaten a very balanced diet today as far as protein/carbs are concerned. are these normal side effects of abrubtly stopping my meat consumption. ughhhh..........i'm miserable.

could be. Who knows. What are you eating exactly, so we can get a better idea of what may be causing the symptoms. i never had side effects like that when I "swiched over" but everyones different.

breakfast- oatmeal with blueberries, toast, and glass of oj
brunch- organic peanut butter bar
lunch- wild rice w/mushrooms, white beans, and corn
afternoon snack- popcorn and another peanut butter bar
dinner- salad with slice of homemade whole wheat bread and a couple handfuls of almonds
water to drink with every meal and throughout the day.

ok, here is my $ 0.02
I dont mix fruit w/ cooked food because it can ferment in the gut like that because its harder to digest properly (ie different enzymes).
And I havent eaten peanuts for a long time. Lots of ppl are allergic to them. My friend gave me a peanut a few months ago, I ate one and was fine, then I went for another and i felt my stomach bubbling and I had to spit it out. also peanuts are actually a bean and have a lower fat content than nuts eating alot of beans is hard on the stomach because they have enzymes in them that can make you sick if you eat them more than a couple times a week.
For protien i'd suggest sunflower seeds or cashews. Dont worry about the fat content because i'd bet money your gonna lose some weight being vegetarian.
And I'm not sure if your using alot of fat like coconut or olive oil in your food but I love it in mine, its needed for normal digestion, along w/ sea salt. but the headaches and stomach aches may be signes of dehydration. popcorn and peanuts can cause that.
My menu is:
Breakfast: Oatmeal
brunch- apple
lunch- rice w/ vegetable curry
snack- cashews (rarely)
dinner- vegetable soup / sweet potato, celery, cilantro
let me know if you have any q's. I've been eating vegetarian for nearly 2 years now.

Why did either of you decide to become a vegetarian?
I have a friend whose doctor advised him to stop drinking alcohol, eating meat, and smoking. He was able to stop drinkin', but he just can't give up the meat or the mary jane. I'd say he's crazy playin' with his health like that... but I gotta admit I'd have a hard time giving up those things myself!

i decided slowly but surely. I read alot of pro's of the vegetarian diet vs the cons of an omnivorous diet. I read books by Andrea's Moritz and alot of it clicked w/ me.
I didnt do it over night tho, I cant really say the exact date I stopped eating meat. But it was a slow and steady process, mabey thats why I never had a sudden cleansing reaction. Basically when the one starts out they have to be very aware of everything they put into their bodies because you reap what you sew. Once they get the hang of it, its pretty much auto cruise, you know.
You know, there is a little eggs and milk in various refined foods. It was about feeling lighter and not so sluggish. I dont drink alcohol either, its basically a poison that i'd rather be without.

I cut out meat, then fish, then egg, then dairy...over a period of about 16 years, heh heh worked for me
"meaty" things like soy-sages, textured veg protein, tofu, falafel, wheat gluten* etc can help make the transition easier if you're used to eating a lot of meat
*but even stray dogs will start looking at you in pity if you make a habit of eating wheat gluten

ahaha yeah "where do you get your protien" ah man. Its like a rhetorical question.
Animal protien tends to accumulate in the arteries and clog them up. Protien, especially animal protien is very sticky.

Just looking at that day's worth of food.. you have a lack of green vegetables and fruits in general. You need to make sure you have all your bases covered. I'm not a vegetarian (yet) but if you are you need to make extra special care you are eating a very well balanced diet. Sounds like you have a good start but you need more fruit in there and you didn't mention what kind of salad it was.. protein is not your only consideration. Just eat fruit and vegetables in separate meals or else they will putrify in your stomach. Like eat fruits and oatmeal at breakfast and then eat the salad and beans and rice at lunch.. just use common sense. Also, nuts are your friend.. very high in good fats and protein. The key is just eating a wide variety of foods and being smart about the order you eat them in..

Well, it's more based on my personal experience than anything else.. and certain fruits and vegetables have different acids and enzymes so it depends on what you are mixing. But in my experience certain fruits and vegetables do not mix well together at all in the stomach. Like mixing milk and orange juice.. it just doesn't work.. at least for me. But some fruits and vegetables DO work well together so I usually just judge it on a case-by-case basis.. but as a general rule I try to avoid mixing them in the same meal to avoid unpleasant chemical reactions. Citrus fruits in particular, I have found do not tend to agree with a number of vegetables and starches and dairy products. It has to do with digestion.. and having the proper PH level in your stomach, so you don't have food rotting in there because it's not being digested properly. I don't know the science behind it, I just know what works for me and I like my digestive tract to be at zen with itself.

hi,
10 year vegan here....more as a vegetarian. first off, good job on kicking the animal products.
well, you may be experiencing some temporary effects of the detox. the biochemicals and adrenaline created by slaughter are highly addictive, but dont worry. if youre really about to snap, then take only a little something dairy as a temporary fix. it has a lot of the biochems without the full blown violence vibes.
next, try eating things you like and are used to. dont change up everything at once. eat veg stuff you normally like and sit well with you. stay away from all the processed grains and prefab foods more and go with fresh fruits, veggies fresh or steamed/curried, whole grains...try to chill on breads, flour etc....keep t simple. be suspicious of the processed stuff especially.
also to help withthe cleanse eat a lot of citrus, fresh lemon juice in water, lemonade, oranges, grapefuit etc. in no time youll be feeling better than ever before. hope this helps! :-)

and oh, yeah, drnk plenty fluids and water whenever the belly acts up, you need it for the cleansing. think about doing a liver/digestive cleanse (these use epsom salt, olive oil, lemon juice...find it on a search).

Im vegan myself; and havent been sick or gotten nearly as many stomach aches since I switched. When I was a meat eater I had crippling stomach pains weekly; which stopped when I became vegetarian. I think it just effects people in different ways and my body doesnt like meat. I cant do dairy products at all. Some people cant do gluten; and homemade whole wheat bread deffinatley has gluten.

I would eat a scrambled egg with olive oil, a toasted bagel, orange juice and non-stimulant herb tea (lots of it).

Is it possible it's in yr head? I know scumpunks eating out of the dumpster that are (relatively) well. Just an idear. Also, i'm a vegetarian and I don't pay near enough attention to my diet to make sure I'm getting the proper nutrients, but I can't complain about terrible pains (regardless of the possible unhealthiness of my diet).
