not totally, you have to use electrolysis to turn the water into HHO (hydrogen, hydrogen, oxygen). This process takes electricity, and you don't get the same amount of power out of the water you invest into it to turn it into HHO. A great idea though, especially if you can charge the batteries using wind turbines.

peace

well yes , electrolysis , but that is from the cell , and battery , the battery will be charged everytime you start it.
water is what you use

like with Colloidal Silver

the same basic process is used there

and you charge the battery by plugging it in, right?? Or putting electricity into it some other way.

the process ive read about , the battery is charge. already , and would have something like an alternator or your
wind turbine idea.
a full hydrogen , not hybrid , wouldnt need electric plugin

Its an exciting prospect. There are some major problems that must be overcome before it is implementable and available for the mass public.

First, like others have said, you still need electricity to perform the hydrolysis. So unless all 'green' sources are used there will still be a carbon footprint.

Also, there is a massive cost associated with Fuel Cell engines. One of the primary costs going to platinum catalysts. It is not going to be economically feasible for some time for the common man.

They require high temperature for the fuel cell to run efficiently (>90% in some cases). This causes a few problems; they must first be warmed up before they are driven which takes time and there are obvious safety concerns of driving a vehicle operating and holding that much temperature.

Also, they are limited in the distance they can cover, currently they are not long distance, this can be overcome by attaching hydrogen tanks. But the volatility of pressurized hydrogen gas is a huge safety concern.

There are some serious logistic, technical and financial problems that must be overcome but this is a field that very much interests me and I hope to see it implemented in my time.

even if it is a hybrid, you will still have to input energy into the motor. You cannot generate enough electricity to perform the electrolysis on the water, then burn they hydrogen, and get enough electricity + power to move the car...this would imply free energy...of which there is no such thing.

i bet if all the cars in world ran off water, all that steam exhaust would cause a climate shift. hippies wouldn't be able to get to the gas station fast enough.

Water vapor is a green house gas. Its unknown how much we could saturate the atmosphere with water vapor, or if it would just rain more. It would probably be a combination of both - extra green house gas and extra rain.

Well the release of water vapor seems like minor issue as direct hydrogen fuel cell engines release less water vapor than combustion engines and none of the carbons.

b/c gas has so much water in it?

No, because the combustion of hydrocarbons in oxygen release water and carbon dioxide.

I dont think that is true. How could a car that runs off of only hydrogen emit less h2o than a car that runs off of a mix of hydrocarbons?

The U.S. Department of Energy says that:

“Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles emit approximately the same amount of water per mile as vehicles using gasoline-powered internal combustion engines.”

Furthermore, this issue was addressed in the Winter 06-07 issue of Earthwise, which is the quarterly newsletter of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Here is the excerpt:

“Since hydrogen fuel cells emit water vapor (a heat-trapping gas), what impact would a hydrogen-based transportation system have on global warming?

To compare the potential climate impact of a future transportation system dominated by hydrogen fuel cells rather than fossil fuels, we must consider all of the heat-trapping emissions produced by these two power sources. If gasoline, for example, fully combusts in a vehicle engine, the tailpipe exhaust will contain both carbon dioxide and water vapor. Tailpipe exhaust from fully combusted fuel cell hydrogen gas (H2), on the other hand, will contain primarily water vapor.

The impact these emissions have on our climate depends in large part on their atmospheric lifetimes. Water vapor remains in the atmosphere only a few days or weeks, and hydrogen gas about two years, but carbon dioxide lingers more than a century. Transitioning to a transportation system based on hydrogen would therefore have essentially no long-term impact on climate due to short-lived water vapor exhaust or minor hydrogen gas leaks, but would dramatically reduce our emissions of long-lasting carbon dioxide-the key factor driving global warming.

You need more energy to create the hydrogen and oxygen than it is later released by combusting them. So, forget it.
