My parents really didn't have extra money when I was growing up. Everything was invested in their big house with 13 acres. My dad did a lot of extra stuff on the side to make ends meet. He was a farmhand, people paid him to clear lots, then he would cut up that wood and sell it as firewood in the winter (I bet I'm one of the few people here who knows wood is sold in "ricks")
When I was a kid I used to be embarrassed b/c we had to can our own food and I didn't want to go with them to sell it b/c I was afraid someone would see me, but I guess that's just how kids are.
I guess I should tell my parents I'm thankful now for all the hard work they put into everything.

This is as well how I grew up for the most part. I had to put myself through college, left the farm young went out and found shitty work, busted my ass!
Then I got older and found a way to make my peace.
Now all I can do is wounder how I can get enough land to have what I had before.
Hopefully you can inherit what your family worked so hard for over the years.
And don't feel bad about being broke,we all started off that way. We will reinvent ourselves a number of times throughout life.:)

oh. and the best bass lake in Illinois...like seriously the best...
one year the corn farmers around the area sprayed some gunk on their crops and it was a heavy rain year, and it came to our lake and killed every catfish in it...
i can remember being about 2' tall draggin catfish up to the house that were like 30lbs.

well, my parents are FAR, FAR off from being broke now.
But growing up, man it was tough. My dad now holds the second highest position at the paper mill he's worked at for over 30 years, and my mom used to manage a pharmacy, but the owners of the pharmacy sold it and she didn't want to work for the new owners... she thought she was going to retire, but the local State Farm insurance branch, who's owner was friends with the pharmacy owner, offered her a job there with a $10k/yr raise plus commissions.
About half a year ago I was at their house and I was peeing and in the little 'reading material' shelf by the toilet was a stack of what looked like monthly statements from their banking, IRA, and 401(k) accounts.
It was a scary, scary large amount of money.
Proof hard work pays off.
which I believe it's part of the reason I get so mad when I see people abusing government assistance. It's like the mentality is just to give up and not try and take the easy way out... and then I see people my parent's age who haven't a pot to piss in, still struggling.
And some of my friends talk about giving their parents money... and that floors me the MOST. I just cannot imagine my parents EVER asking me for money, it's just not right.
Maybe it's just my old-fashioned southern upbringing, but I really do get scared when I think about the future.
And the worst part is I'm only 25.
