Converting FAT32 to NTFS
    #8389908 - 05/11/08 05:32 PM (3 months, 17 days ago)

Has anyone done this?
I've read that NTFS runs much quicker than FAT32,
and it easier on your system. Is there much of a
difference between the two?

I'm trying to unrar a 5 GB file and cannot do it
because FAT32 can't handle files over 4 GB.

I've been backing up stuff and trying to make space
on my computer to do the conversion, I have about 1/3
of the hard drive empty but still don't have enough
space to do the conversion.

Is it really worth it?

You can reformat it as NTFS, but you'll lose all of your data. FAT32 is pretty outdated. Back up your data and reformat.

I'm gonna have to buy an external hard drive to back up all my stuff,
burning everything on DVDs is too time consuming.
Then again, I don't have the money for an external hard drive.

To do the conversion to NTFS all you should have to do is go to the command line and type
"convert c: /fs:ntfs" without the quotes.
What OS are you running?

I'm running XP.
I know how to do the conversion, it won't let me because I
don't have enough hard drive space to do it with.
My hard drive has 53.3 GB free space, and 176 GB available.
I've burned about 4 DVDs backing up things and then deleting
them from the computer to make more room, but I ran out of
DVDs.

Er, you don't need to format to change the filesystem type. There are quite a few programs out there that I've used, but one of the more popular ones is called Partition Magic.

Be sure to read through the help file if you're unsure what to do or how to use it, though. I think there's even a fancy *.avi clip that comes with it that gives a walk-through.

Also, as a precaution you should backup your data, or at least the stuff you absolutely couldn't live without. I've yet to lose data as a result of using Partition Magic, nor do I recall ever even having to use the rescue disks in case something did go wrong.

Try to avooooid using the disk checking-thingy that comes with it, though. I have a 160GB external, and it took like, 2 days to do a vigorous check, and didn't end up finding any errors in the long run.

I run Windows' chkdsk utility occasionally though, along with defragging about once a week.

Oh, didn't see Gobblin's post, there, nor your reply to it.

Apologies.

Shouldn't take too long to convert it though, assuming it doesn't require a post-convert disk check.

Wrong.

Just run CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS from the command promt.

I would if I could, but don't have enough free space to do it.

I realize this. My bad. It's still a good idea to back up your data.

if you use partition magic, still be sure to back up your data, it has been known to fuck up data, and just lose other stuff...

peace

Delete some files, and then try again.

i think you should partition it, atleast once.
so youd have two hardrives,
make one , your main drive with like 20 gig.
and the other the rest , .

for instance i have 2 ,160 giggers

i have 3 partitions on each , and make my main c:\ directory with the 20 gig.

this helps in one way , that .if you ever have too format . you wont lose any information from the partitioned drives.
besides the c:\main hd partition

i do this for quick formatting also.
if anything were too hapen , you could have your pc newly installed anytime you like.

anyway i suggest this , and formatting in the ntfs that youd like.

i know my limitations and you should know yours .!
