have you opened it up and looked inside yet? that could be an over heating problem like RuNE said before, You'd be able to hear if its your hard drive, ticking, clicking, high pitched squealing=hard drive Randomly shutting down=overheating. I've had computers that have ran faster after applying the heat sink gel, it ran 20 degrees cooler so over heating technically can make your computer run slower even though I still don't believe it.

Are all the fans spinning? Especially the one on the CPU heatsink?

there are only two things in the startup on ccleaner and they are ctfmon.exe and NvCplDaemon.exe.
it has got a little bit better in the sense that it hasn't been freezing up all the time, it's basicly stopped freezing. it's still running quite slow though, and sometimes it juuust about freezez, but doesn't.

the hard drive has been making some weird clicking noise but not reguarly. (i'll look for something on youtube that resembles the noise).

no can't find anything, but it just does one click, and then sounds like it is powering down. last week when it would make that noise, it would shut down, but now it doesn't.

also i checked all three fans, and they seem to be working fine.

have you ran a spyware check recently? if you don't have one i would suggest downloading ad aware because its free and i have had luck with it. download it and immediatly update it so you have the latest definitions. then run a full scan also, like cleverwise said, shutdown any limewire or bittorrent programs.

the spyware can really fuck you up from my experience.

is it the full version? you might want to try another anti spyware program just to be sure. you could delete it afterwards, but to me it sounds like what my computer does when i have spyware.

I always replace a hard drive immediately whenever it makes any noise out of the normal. This is where I would start...

The one other thing to check are the clips securing the heatsink to the cpu. Usually not a problem, but I have seen some cheap plastic ones that break over time. Everything will look good on the surface, but the pressure holding the heasink down isn't correct. However, sounds like you have a failing hard drive.

ok i now have a new problem, but rather than starting a new thread, i'll post it here as i don't think it will be to hard a problem to fix, but it's beyond my level of knowledge.

when i thought the original problem was one of the hard drives, i decided to unplug one of them, to see which one was causing the problems. now when i start my computer up, it just goes straight into bios setup utility, and doesn't load windows.

my question is, how do i get into windows.

i fuckin knew i shouldn't have fucked around with the hardware, i have no clue when it comes to that.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.... oh my fuckin' God. Too funny.

That computer is obviously fucked. You've had it for 3 years? From my experience computers just get more and more screwed up over time. Parts just get worn after time.

You should build your own cheap computer on the net. That's what I did. I wouldn't invest anymore of my time into something like this if I were you, as it's a lost cause. If you really want to know there are a number of programs you can use to check various parts of your computer. It MAY be your ram but... I have no idea for sure.

Yes, you disconnected the master hard drive. You must still be running IDE drives and the BIOS is looking for the master and only finding the slave. Plug the hard drive back in.

Run a full check disk on the suspected failing drive. To do that, go to my computer, select the hard drive that windows is on and then right click it, go to properties, click that. Click the disk tools tab, then go to checkdisk and click that button. Check both options, hit ok, it will tell you to reboot, do it. The disk check will take a couple of hours usually. That should fix some problems, but if the drive is failing, the drive is failing.

Another possibility is that you simply have too many processes and services for your RAM to handle and your computer is forced to store RAM contents on a page file on the hard drive. If you can get your computer booting again, right click on my computer and go to properties. It should say how much RAM the system has. Post that here. If it's anything less than say... 512MB, you definitely need a RAM upgrade. I don't suggest running XP with less than a gig of RAM.

Gumby is right about the master/slave issue. You will either need to switch around the cables or manually set the drives to master or slave in the BIOS (rater than Cable select). There are also jumpers on the hard drives themselves, although those shouldn't need to be changed if it was working before.

After reading your first post in the thread, the problem almost sounds identical to the time when I had faulty RAM. If you have more than one RAM stick, try swapping one out to see if that helps at all. It's pretty easy to do, just make sure to ground yourself on the case so you don't zap anything.

As mentioned, another possibility is overheating, make sure you keep your computer relatively free from dust and double check that all of the fans are running. You can download an application called SpeedFan to monitor your temperatures.

You could also try booting up to one of those live Linux CD's just to make sure it's not your OS/software that's causing the freezing.
