Computer running really slow. (updated, now running like absolute shit and freezing non stop)
    #8401529 - 05/14/08 04:17 PM (3 months, 21 days ago)

i don't know what is going wrong. i have had my computer for the last 3 years and it has never ran this slow. in the last few weeks it's been running super slow (well nowhere near as slow as some but still slow for me) and was freezing all the time.

i use windows xp and i use bitdefender. i ran ccleaner, registry first aid, registry fix, and defrag with diskeeper.

after i ran all these programs it has seemed to stop freezing, but is still running slow.

any help would be appreciated.

first off , your probably using alot of things from the start up, the windows startup.

some people use ms config , but thatll make the boot , not the priority and all the apps will be taken off during that process.
if your running windows xp , any version .you shouldnt have more than 30 processes at once.
id take a look at from regedit.exe
type:
regedit
in the run bar

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

if your a 64 bit user , use those and this also.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

--
delete everything in there besides your (DEFAULT)
and your firewall,id suggest using kaspersky, or zonealarm. .as long as you keep it on a fair setting.and also keep up with whatever you install on your pc and what goes on , you shouldnt have the trouble youve had.
could also , be that it is , 3 years old.
id open it up , clean it out, if youve havent done so.
do that once a month.

anyway hope the pc works out.

if u have ccleaner, use the startup tool in it to remove startup items from your registry, it's much easier than the last advise. also google your processes and cut the crap u don't need. if u have limewire, get rid of it.

it would be easier but easier isnt necessarily the best way . like i said there is an easier way. read the post.
and like i stated , if you knew about what your putting on your pc , that wouldnt have happened.
the reg cleaner , is really pointless, and only for people without pc knowledge.

you can also type 'services.msc' without the tic marks into the run command box, and go through there, there are many services that are not necessary, you can either google them, or just go with your best instinct...then double click them and change the ones you dont want running from automatic to manual.

peace

which is most computer users...

If it just shut down randomly, it could be a hardware problem. Maybe a dying power supply, or dying fans. Heatsinks could also be full of dust, causing overheating which will shut down a PC.

really delete everything exept default? that won't do anything bad? There are about 11 other things in there other than default.

yes its ok , just make sure what prog you have for firewall.

every else will go.
like yahoo. if thats up why have it, and like other things not lime wire.

id do it all.

the default is supposed to be there.
so id take it all off. and clean it like i said.
im certain with so many youll see a gain in performance

well too be for certain .

go too system in control panel.
it should say 32 or 64 bit in general info

or at the task manager.

it should show performance tab. click then at top will be
cpu , if it shows show for both or per cpu , then itll have it
. also from the location of the wow64node sec on the registry

here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

you shouldnt have it

for 32 bit
that is like the emulation sec or the reg.
too be compatible too 32 and 64 together

also , you could check the model number of your pc which im assuming you bought from a store instead of building it yourself.

id do that next time.
usually cheaper too.

check that.

ccleaner does what you suggested above without you having to edit the registry directly.

my computer is totally fucked now, it just won't stop freezing. at first i thought it was the hard drive, but now i'm thinking otherwise.
i have dual boot on two seperate hard drives, and i only usually use one OS (so really only one hard drive) but today after it froze up like 3 times in a row, i tried the other OS, and that froze before it even started up. so i think it definitely isn't the hard drive.

anyone have any more advice?
