Penguarky Tunguin said: Pick up any book in the new-age section of any bookstore and you will find mentions of the Mayans. The new age movement is a mish-mash of convenient theories grounded in no scientific basis whatsoever. It's incredible the amount of claims that are made to be scientific, especially in the realms of quantum physics.
I will kill the next person who claims that the reason the deli I frequent is out of turkey is due to an abnormal fluctuation of the quantum field. Physicists don't even know what is going on!
And the Mayans never predicted a pole shift either, which is what I was talking about in the sentence you replied too...
I am sorry for not completely absorbing what you said before replying, it just struck a nerve when I thought you were referring to the Mayans as new-age, and I responded before grasping your point.
The fact that the "new-age" movement pays tribute to the ancient Mayans, is not a good reason to say the Mayans are new-age. That's like saying Jesus was a jerk, because his modern day "followers" don't follow his teachings very well.
I personally suspect as do many, that the Mayans were VERY scientific in everything they did, but you are correct, they never really ascribed meaning to their calendar ending, and definitely didn't comment on the "pole-shift".

they ascribed meaning to the end of certain cycles WITHIN the mayan calendric systems, and one of the largest cycles comes to an end winter solstice 2012. the calenders in the tradition are to looked at to receive understanding of times cyclical nature, and there is no end point or single culmination.
if you do study on the Katun prophecy you will see that they represent a pattern of events that repeat themselves, and are quite remarkable in their correlation to modern historic events. the Maya were not looking to the end of this Katun as a cataclysmic destruction of the world, or as a means of transcending the past, but as the past coming to be integrated with the present.

Its a pretty big job, and an amazing achievement but eventually they could only do so much. The year 2012 was as far as they managed to accurately chart, given more time they would of probably gone further.

No, this moron behind me when I got not-that-upset about the deli running out of turkey, so I ordered chicken instead. But the fucker said something about quantum fields and he wasn't joking either. He said it like he knew for sure.
