Fishtank Heater Incubator Help
    #8398333 - 05/13/08 08:23 PM (4 months, 26 days ago)

Ok some questions on my incubator. If you look up into the above pics I have a fishtank heater that will be placed in one plastic tub filled with water and then the other tub will fit into this one. So I have some questions...

1) Should I keep my heater at around 27 degress Celsius, about 80-81 F? Do you think the heater will automatically shut off it if exceeds this?

2) How would you go about keeping the incubator nice and clean? Like wipe it down with alcohol as often as I can?

3) Should I keep a blanket over the top of the incubator? I heard this is a good idea to keep in some heat.

4) After 100% colonized I know you are supposed to wait another like 5-10 days to let the mycelium "latch onto" the substrate. When I reach this time do I leave them in or take them out of the incubator?

5) Anyone have any luck with a fishtank heater incubator? Any suggestions or tips?

These questions have also been posted on my growlog thread, sorry for putting them in two spots.

You really don't need a incubator...Room temp is just fine, it just may take a day or two more and there be less fire risk

My basement is really pretty cold and I'm willing to create an incubator considering I bought all the supplies even if it does only increase the colonization by a couple days.

the heater MIGHT shut off. i'm an avid fish keeper, and i've had 2 whisper heaters go bad on me and cook my fish to like 115f, buy cheap stuff and you might get cheap results

I would get a thermometer and check the temperature of the inside tub. Keep the temperature inside the tub around 80F. The heater will turn off when the water is at the correct temperature. It will also turn on when it needs to.

I would throw a cap full of bleach into the tub filled with water to keep things clean. If you have a lid for the tub, I wouldn't bother with a blanket over the top, but others will disagree.

TITs are fantastic for colder climates!

I am using a fish tank heater. I put it in a glass pyrex bowl so it did not melt my tub. I had to mess with the heater to get the temp right and it should shut off at that temp. You just have to mess with it. mine is steady at 81. I also Put a towel on top of jars and a blanket over tub cause its still kinda chilly here. go to lowes and buy a thermostat. Anyways its working for me. Its my first time and out of ten jars ive got 6 started and the other 4 are starting to show signs. knocked up 1 week ago. Just mess with it youll get it eventually. good luck.

quick FYI for you guys who are gonna use the fish heaters

take the heater out of the package
figure out your desired temp
fill your tub with water, and test the temp with a thermometer

set heater for middle setting, and put the heater in UNPLUGGED for 30 minutes. this will let the thermostat register itself. check the water temp about 1hr later, if its not there, go up 2 clicks and check again in 30 minutes. repeat this until its set right. letting it sit in the water unplugged for 30 miutes though can really make things simple

I bought a fish tank heater that looked a lot like that one(may be the same) and it's automatic. It stayed steady at about 76 degrees, so I took it back and got one that is adjustable. With the new one I keep it at a steady 82 degrees and some of my jars were fully colonized in about a week and a half.

This will work, but isn't necessarily optimal when the closet is 60*F.

Easier, yes.
