Art as a tangible manifested reference for the human experience.
    #8388481 - 05/11/08 09:29 AM (7 months, 25 days ago)

Is it just me, or does all art and trade--when progressed to a far enough skill level--end up being a representative tangible "map" or "compass" for navigation of the inner psyche and the experience of being human?

I first noticed this with my voice. The more I sing, the more I realize that I can "hear a map" of how my chakras are balanced as I express.

I've even gone beyond this into realizing that there is a map of my "inner world" hidden within it as well. It's hard to explain, but there are these archtypical structures and stories that pop into my head while I'm performing... they represent my voice as it is currently limited, and as I allow the story to unfold internally, (through a process of surrender, instead of restricting my mind and resisting the story) these stories reveal the path to losing the tension in my voice through natural resolution.

A simple example would be the oft-repeated concept in movies and books of a masculine figure choosing self-sacrifice in recognition of the fact that the feminine figure will be saved, and that the feminine figure carries the fruit of future generations within.

Realizing the resolution and necessary theoretical self-sacrifice in such a situation literally and physically reveals the necessity of sacrifice of MY will in order to find my true voice.

I know this is out there, but this is the shroomery. I'm wondering if there are any artists who have found similar natural cues and guidance in their art form.

It's not out there at all. I think you've hit on the essence of Jung and the archetypes of the unconscious, both yours and the collective.

Have you ever read his essays on mandalas? I think you'd dig it. Check it out if you want.

Quote:

For Jung, mandalas are "vessels" into which we project our psyche. It is then returned to us as a way of restoration. He recognized that archetypes from many cultures were seen in this spontaneous expression of the unconscious.

Jung is a very cool dude!

This is why I like flame working as my creative outlet.
The glass has to be centered on it's axis for it to be true. If you your spin is wobbly or your heat isn't even, things start to flow and react oddly.
When i am centered and my thoughts are flowing freely after enough guidance and muscle memory. Steps and technique become quick efficient and true. Thermodynamics, chemistry, and gravity are playing roles. But I'm just a whole in the flute that "gods" breath flows through.

No, I haven't read any Jung. I'll look into his Mandala Essays... thanks.

And while I appreciate that input, do you have any personal experiences to share? I am more interested in hearing about other peoples' individual interpretations and experiences with how they relate to their craft in a metaphysical sense.

Sheik, that is definitely the kind of thing I'm talking about... as a craft progresses, it becomes a centering tool for your being because you have to be centered to perform the duty correctly... so, much like yoga, a craft becomes an active process in centering.

Anybody else experience this kind of thing? I'd love to hear some descriptions of unusual crafts and how you've experienced manifestations of this sort of thing... it might even spark my interest in a new field.

I'm not so sure if I'm in agreement on the issue of chakras but "maps of self" makes sense. Odd way to word it but I thought it was commonly accepted that an artist's creation was outpouring from the artists mind. It seems that you are also touching upon the subject of which has more influence: art over humans or humans over art. I'd say it's likely pretty close to 50/50 but I'd like to read more about Carl Jung's mandalas.
