the developement of vulvary cells in nematodes depends of their distance to the anchor cell. this cell emits a signal, a protein called Lin-3, wich is captured by the vulvary precursor cells through their recpetors, Let-23. The cell closest to tot eh anchor cell will receive the strongest signal and become the primary cell, which will then send the order to its two neighboring cells, by the means of a lateral inhibitory signal, Lin-12, not to become a primary cell, therefore making them become secondary cells. The vulvary cells furthest away from the anchor cell will not receive the signal and therefore they will become tertiary cells.
