Why I'm Not a Vegetarian
    #8394972 - 05/12/08 11:27 PM (3 months, 22 days ago)

I'm just sitting here eating some jerky and thinking about vegetarians. Some don't eat meat simply because they don't like the taste, and some avoid it due to religious or moral reasons.

I like meat. It's fine if you don't eat it because you think the veggie way is healthier, but that's not gonna stop me. I'm skinny as hell anyway, I could use it.

Yes, slaughterhouses seem a bit cruel sometimes, but honestly, what have you done about it? Sorry, this just isn't going to keep me away from meat either. Maybe I'm evil?

Another argument is that eating meat is unnatural because humans aren't built like a species of carnivores. Honestly I don't know enough about biology to know if that's true or not, but it makes no difference to me. Some creatures evolved large claws and fangs to hunt with, while humans evolved a big brain. Our guns and knives are just as much a part of nature as claws.

I have no problem if you are a vegetarian, but quit telling me to change my diet.

I found myself going away
Never wanting to go back again.
Leaving all my thoughts behind
Searching for some new ones inside.

I found myself. :yesnod::headbang::yesnod:

Ill certainly agree with that.

Behold yon miserable creature. That Point is a Being like ourselves, but confined to the non-dimensional Gulf. He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

One of the main reasons im not vegetarian is i beleive that a carrot is just as much a part of life as any animal. Of course death isnt the end. Death is only an experience.

I wouldn't mind because death is not the end. I do not desire death, but i do not fear it either. there must be a watcher to see death of mind and body. The watcher can't die because the watcher is seperate from experience.

This is probably true. Denial is easy until you have images in your head.

Maybe I should request a tour, to keep me honest.

Or maybe burgers are more important to me :strokebeard:

If you're sincerely interested, check out the movie 'Earthlings' on www.freedocumentaries.org
It would be hard not to become vegetarian after watching that film. I became 100% vegan for a few weeks after watching it, but could not sustain it. I still eat a turkey sub every now and then, but always feel guilty about it. Sentient beings do not have to be my food, and IMO there's no honestly legitimate reason for them to be...I only ever eat animals because I enjoy the taste.

I still wonder if the killing of animals is fundamentally different from the killing of plants, or if I just identify with animals (particularly mammals) more easily because of how similar they are to me.

Is it not just arbitrary favoritism?

The obvious difference is that animals experience pain and terror when they are being slaughtered, as well as extreme discomfort, pain, anxiety, and depression living in the unsanitary and tightly-crowded conditions of most large holding facilities.

You could make the argument that sentience and the ability to suffer are things we value just because we ourselves are imbued with those attributes, and that in that way killing animals and killing plants is really no different. But then couldn't I justify killing and eating one of your family members by saying it's no worse than you eating a hamburger? You're just more attached to your family member than to a cow because of your similarities, but it's not ultimately any different, is it? Where do we draw the line?

Being skinny does not mean you are healthy... I am a meat-eater too. But, you need to know that if you are eating packaged meats from your grocer, then you are ingesting horrible chemicals, and even CANCER. That's right! nearly half of all non free-range chickens would have died naturally from cancer. And don't even get me started on fast-food. Bleh!

We live in a world that can only be described as a food chain, and we are part of that chain. Humans however are unique among all other living things on this planet, in that we can conceptualize abstract thought. By eating other animals we fall, victimized by our hedonistic weaknesses. We should be evolving past this, but it is just getting worse. I still eat a little pork and a lot of chicken, but I am having a hard time justifying the conditions and the out of control slaughter of billions of animals. There are just too many people, who are too lazy to grow their own food. Go to a "meat proccessing"plant or watch a documentary, find out the facts so you can become an informed consumer.

Exactly.
When they are killed, lots of hormones and other chemicals and are pumped out into their body, which in turn get taken in by the eater. (not to mention the artificial hormones and chemicals pumped into them before they are killed)

to not eat meat
why that's quite the treat
eating pig fat?
you might as well eat a cat!
as for the American diet
well, there just ain't no need to fry it
so eat up them greens
turn that fat to muscle o so lean
your face shall shine
no more karmic food crime
just good ol enzyme-tastical yum

but seriously...what dirtworshipper said. when we eat the meat, we are eating inconceivable misery.

yum?

I eat meat once in a while, but I understand that it is a thermodynamically ineffective industry and this to me is the only reasonable argument against it.

I think most of these moral arguments are quite phony. They seem to spring out because animals, in particular bigger mammals with their big, round and shiny eyes, react in ways we can easily identify and be empathic to. We are total psychopaths towards plants.

To eat is to kill, period, get over it and eat your veggies.
