The New Psychedelic Rock

There has been a resurgence of psychedelic rock in the past few years, which hopefully will blossom into a much larger scene. The movement can be largely accredited to one man, Anton Newcombe. This is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but the man seems to have make a huge impact on many artists, especially since around 10 bands in this genre have members that were previously in Anton's band, the Brian Jonestown Massacre. While in my opinion BJM is clearly best and most original (although they are a 60's revivalist band) some of the other bands have impressed, and may be more suitable to help the genre attract a larger audience, due to Anton's crazyness. Anyways I think its some great music, very similar to sixties music, but influenced by shoegaze and drone.
Here's the bands, with some recommendations for some songs y'all might like.
Brian Jonestown Massacre http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=4247720 Recommended Tracks - Wisdom & When Jokers Attack
The Quarter After http://www.myspace.com/thequarterafter Recommended Tracks - Early Morning Rider & Know Me When I'm Gone
Asteroid #4 http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68510472 Into the Meadow & What a Sorry Way to Go
Black Angels - much more drone in this band - less reminiscent of BJM than most of the other bands http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=1607546 Black Grease
The Lovetones http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=2741538 Mantra & Navigator
The Committee to Keep Music Evil - This is the record label Anton started. The website has some songs that aren't on the band's pages. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=325985169 Some of the good ones: Give It All I Can - The Lovetones The Godspell According to A A - BJM Overruled - Floorian - This is a much more ambient song
Other Bands: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club The Koolaid Electric Company The Dilettantes The Dolly Rocker Movement The Warlocks

Hell yeah man!
I've been listening to BJM on and off for quite a while. I like some of their stuff better than other (duh) but BJM covers a pretty wide range of sounds.
Take note- you can download most (all?) of their albums for free on the label's website!!!!!!!
Too bad they don't play shows in the Midwest US.
Anton is a crazy fucker too!

I'll look into this later, I've been so immersed in 60/70 psychedelica that I haven't even bothered to check the modern scene (or even modern music in general, really)
From what I have ehard, though, it seems psychedelic rock nowadays relies far more on pretty drones or freaky jams rather than actual lysergic rhythm

I was going to mention that, but it seems that the website is down. I'm not sure if this is temporary or if they have stopped offering their music free for good. I have asked on the record label's site I'll post the responses.

I'd check out a couple of songs if you're interested. I think alot of these songs aren't like that. I wouldn't exactly call them poppy but they're fairly short and usually keep the normal rhythm without jamming too far off base. I don't really know how to describe music but I think I know what you're talking about and most of these songs are pretty tightly constructed.

Go to the album (wherever you have it stored), right click, and select "Create Archive of..." (You are a Mac user, right?) It's really fucking simple to zip albums then throw them on Mediafire for others to download.

From what I've seen Panda could probably hold his own (of course I know nothing of the genre, but he's always talking about some shit I'm unaware of.)

Oh I'm sure he could..I was just talking shit for the fun of it
It is one of my favorite, and more knowledgeable genres though. I lived with a friend who plays drums in a band that I won't mention because ya'll will probably just call me out for being a scenester name-dropper or something.
Anyhow, he almost exclusively listened to obscure psychedelic music. I already thought that I'd known a good thing or two about the genre before I knew him, but he really opened up my eyes even further to the likes of stuff such as The Left Banke, Status Quo, Honeybus, White Noise, and one of my favorites...the original Nirvana (a 60's psychedelic twee pop band from the UK). Great stuff, but I honestly can't imagine listening to nothing but older psychedelic records. I would literally just go insane after awhile.

No you wouldn't
Actually, to be honest, I don't think anyone can fully comprehend the amount of music that come out in the 60's

yes, i would.
there's simply just too much great music out there from other eras. If I really HAD to only listen to music from one decade, sure of course I'd go with the 60's, but why pigeonhole yourself away from all those other eras that have their own respective, distinct feel to them???
I'm a music geek. I need to sample and absorb styles all throughout the entire spectrum to feel whole.
variety is the spice of nice.

So what are you waiting for? Start that 60s psychedelic thread. There's already a Indie, Album, Ambient and Avant Garde thread. Get the ball rolling and I'll download any torrents you post.
