I watched this special on the History Channel on the origins and teachings of the "mystical" Kabbalah.
OH MY GOD!, what a bunch of non-sense. Can't believe that anyone could take this stuff seriously at all. Decoding books and making connections where none (IMO) exist. It looked like the silliest shit in the world with a lot of Jewish bearded dudes with their heads to a wall chanting and bobbing like chickens, hoping to influence the mind of God. It was like a cartoon of human buffoonery.
What a disappointment.

the bobbing chicken dance is equivalent to the spinning sufi dance, or the use of beads and chanting and yoga, but it is integrated into a group activity that is formal yet informal (not very attractive sexually - I must say) however it is as effective for achieving satori, absorptions etc.
the praying is not to influence god - though a tv show may have indicated that - try not to believe tv show's, one could even suppose that Iraq has WOMD.
anyway the kabballa is an index, or rather the zohar is, there is no kabballa as such, and this index to dreams is like tarot or astrology, an abstract symbology, or dream symbology, which is very useful to study. dismissal at an instant is not fair judment. (thought the tv show probably failed to show anything of value or interest, or hid it under ugliness - i did not see it)
traditionally it is kept private - and it is only allowed to men over 40 yrs old who have no other necessary work do do (sound like monks?? - it should)
Lately it is debased and publicised and popularized and it looks like any other crack pot colection of mumbo jumbo.
I would expect no less.
finding is the path, what you were shown on TV was a pile of pebbles scooped from a path by people who cannot see what it is or where it goes.

I know very little about the Kaballah, but I would very much believe that bobbing motion while reciting your Holy prayers would easily put one into a "trance" like state; in the same way the spinning Sufis are put "There" by spinning, or yogi's chanting the Infinite names of God.
if the Jewish prayers are anything like Sanskrit mantra's and other Sacred Sanskrit Texts that are commonly chanted, it is to help manifest those qualities in One's self, to help further the Realization, and to help increase the Faith; which is what the entire thing is based upon.

Sufi whirling is a great meditation, & very easy & fun!
Not sure about this kabbalah stuff, all i know is madonna's nuts. 
From what ive discovered none of this nonsense is needed, truth is so simple.
Just throw away everything, all beliefs, concepts, thoughts then you are true.
Having the courage to be belief-less, concept-less is all that is needed.

i didn't get to see the show....
what sort of connections were being made, if you don't mind saying?
and if there are non existent connections...what would be the problem with making those connections? it seems to me...that there would only be a problem when someone takes their interpretation to an extreme and acts out on those extreme thoughts....
it's not what goes in the mouth (brain) that defiles a man...but what comes out that does (his actions).
