i don't have any pictures on this off hand, but i can try to paint one in your brain for you.....
think about this, and think about it heavily, cause this is where your answer is:
What makes us see shit as it is?
Yea yea, light through the eye etc.... but once it gets to the brain, how do we know to see the keyboard in front of us, rather than a lots of lines and colors in frequent disarray?
Psychs toy with this mechanism, in a multitude of ways, each one in its own way, with some, of course, being particularly similar to others, while remaining unique.
There are a lot of interesting theories on what exactly it is psychs DO with this mech that make what happens, happen... redgreenvines has some interesting ones, and they're prolly as close as I could get to describing them, atleast right now....
Just think about how your brain paints what you see while sober. Keep your brain on that. Psychs just make that mech work a lil different, but it's THAT mech that you want to figger how it works.
Make sense?

Well, what is reality, brother?
There are really only two things that we can really count on... or maybe in better words, really trust that they are really there. Those things are our perception, and then whatever it is we're perceiving.
"Reality" is just this speed of molecular vibration we've all gotten used to. Many other realities exist IN THE EXACT same place as you and I, all at once.
What keeps us connected to everything is that everything is all one thing... Even if you weren't a part of All of This, simply by BEING, you actually would be a part of it. Understand?
If you're asking what has us perceiving this reality instead of one of the many infinite other ones... Well, that has a lot to do with evolution and how our physical bodies needed to adapt to this environment to survive, etc etc...
If you're asking how that mechanism works that holds us here, your guess is as good as mine, brother. I'm still working away at that answer, as I'm sure many others are. Once we can work that, should be able to start willingly viewing the other realities without drugs, instruments, etc...
This place, Our Universe, was created WITHOUT our science and WITHOUT all of our technology, and operated for MILLIONS of years before people showed up, and thousands of years before we started making any kind of anything.
Our mind is all we need to travel from one side of the universe to other. Our bodies are for operating here. Western society has looked away from the mystical side of existence for a long time... That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That doesn't mean it isn't real.
You're on the right website to help you figure this stuff out.
Check some of my old posts, check out redgreenvines', check out TheDudeNJ's, and DEFINITELY check out Yageman's posts... reading a good number of those should REALLY start to paint an interesting, sexy, lovely, FAIRLY ACCURATE picture in your brain piece of how some shit works in this universe.
I recommend everybody here do that, actually. FOR THE GOOD OF OUR FUCKING PLANET. We will need to understand this information, or accept our fate when America's consumerism runs even more rampant than it has already and brings us to The Real End...
I just woke up and posted that... good stuff for you.

ok; the cerebral cortex of the brain is a reaction surface for electrical waveforms. the signals land on this surface and spread like circular waves on a puddle in a light rain. each instant is another interference (*) pattern. the signals fire strongly for 1/15th of a second and then fade rapidly.
with psychedelics, and dreaming, the fading takes longer: this can happen if serotonin is kept in the synapses, so they keep firing (or sputtering or echoing) after the signal pulse would normally have passed away.
Other neurotransmitters can be involved in the effect of extended fading, or synapse retriggering.
with longer fading, you will see things from subssequent frames overlapped or conjoined in interesting ways.
you will also have memory fragments which are equivalent signals to sensory signals that persist and hover in the space of vision and sound (etc.), and senses will simultaneously persist and cross over into the awareness that is accustommed to sweeping a less sticky field of mental activity.
work with this longer fading of signals and you will see the effect as it occurs naturally, and you will unravel your own personality with ease and gentle understanding.
(*) the interference pattern is used to fix signals tha toccur together in time into memory, and it is used to discover motifs or simmilarities between things, which is how recal operates.
