The Greatful Dead

I genuinely understand a lot of older music, but I must be missing something here. What's the deal with these guys?
Can anyone point me in the direction of their superior material? I've heard all their "greatest hits" and other bullshit, but I don't understand what the big deal is.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Doors, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc.
Any recommendations?
Does anybody even listen to these guys anymore?

Its all about taste, maybe you just dont like them. Maybe you havent heard them live? Have you listened to them while tripping? You can stream my favorite show here, http://www.archive.org/details/gd1991-09-10.sbd.waddell.89085.sbeok.flac16 This show features The Grateful Dead with Branford Marsalis Playing sax throughout the whole show. Using the same website you can stream lots of other Dead shows too, Check out some early stuff from them, Pre-1971 with Pigpen for a more raw sound, also try different shows goinf up a few years at a time. If you will ever like them, this is a good way to find out. Seriously try to check them out while tripping if you can. Peace.

I generally have to be high to listen to them. One of my favorite songs by them is Ripple. I don't listen to them much. Of course you can't forget Hard to handle or He's Gone.

the grateful dead is a whole other level above the doors, zeppelin, etc. like someone else said, you generally have to be high to really appreciate their music. they can take you to truly ecstastic states of consciousness

I believe this. Tons of people swear by them. I suppose I discovered the Doors, etc. at the right place, at the right time.
I've heard some of their songs live, but I'm not old enough to have see them live.
Is that what it was/is about? Being there? Getting soaked with a spray bottle full of water and LSD?

Check out the Sugar Magnolia at the Capitol Theater on 1971-2-18. That's one of my favorite songs ever.
Infact that whole second set is awesome:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-02-18.sbd.stephens.6672.sbeok.shnf
They vary a lot. I notice that songs will be good in some shows, suck in others, and BLOW ME AWAY in others still. When they are awesome, they are REALLY damn awesome.
The studio recordings don't capture the energy at all IMO.

If you could've gone to a concert and felt the whole experience you would understand why we love them so. It can't be explained easily. The albums can't capture that.
