its fucking lame. it cuts out every so often for reasons that appear to be due to my computer, rather than the service provider. when i lose my connection, i get it back by going into my network connections and disabling/enabling the connection. it will work for some time afterwards, then i lose it again and the process repeats. and im pretty much retarded when it comes to technical stuff. i tried clicking around in options and such. i tried clicking the "repair connection", but it just tells me it cant do it and to talk to the network administrator... which in this case is me. and when it cuts out, it still says its connected... but if that were the case i wouldnt be making this thread.
when my brother was living with me, we had our computers set up to a network through a router... when he left, he took the router with him and now my computer is just plugged straight into the modem. its a cable connection through cox by the way. and im using xp. im not sure if its just something screwy with my settings or what. any ideas?

My guess would be a shitty modem
The modem/router they give you when you get a connection around here is practically useless. Very shitty.
If you have a decent amount of connections you will get disconected constantly, or the thing just won't work, and you'll be forced to power cycle the thing repeatedly. Its pretty insulting how cheap a decent modem is compared to what they give you.
I'd ask for a new modem or buy one.

actually the problem is sometimes simpler .
try going too power options and make it not power down.
ive had that problem in that past , and that helped me.
certain devices do shutoff, and with a ethernet card ect which im supposing is automatically on the shuttoff modes
.windows sets it as default
