I think I might have killed a swan

I was going to post this thread in anonymous but I don't think it's really all that bad. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.
I've been wanting to get this off my chest for years. This happened when I was 18 and it was my first encounter with Lucy. A bunch of my friends went to a nice park in a wealthy part of downtown Dallas to chill and come up. We were sitting by this little pond area eating and throwing bread to all the ducks. There was this really beautiful swan in the water and it was swimming around and making noise and generally being amazing.
It came right up to us and as it swam closer I got really happy, at that point I was tripping and I thought it was going to talk to us, impart wisdom, chill on the banks, etc. Instead it made a beeline in the water for my foot and bit it. Hard. I think it thought my toe was a morsel of food.
I got scared and a little pissed so I threw this plastic bottle cap at it to make it go away, and it thought that was food too and it swallowed it. I could see the bottle cap going all the way down its neck until it finally swallowed it.
The swan swam away and looked alright but to this day I'm guilty about possibly killing it. Does anyone here know anything about biology? Did I kill the swan?
Now that I think about it I remember my friend comforting me by saying "don't worry about it, all swans are dicks", and I did get a pretty strong asshole vibe from this swan. And I think I remember my dad saying something about having to fight with swans on the golf course all the time.

Swans are dicks.
don't feel bad. It bit you, and it paid the consequences.
Isn't that what humans do? The only thing more appropriate would have been if you took home the body and ate it.

Well you can't blame things on swan and geese. They've had to become assholes what with all the hunting.
I just feel really bad because the swan was pretty and it was springtime and I might have accidentally orphaned a bunch of little swans. And it was a very beautiful, very big swan. The kind someone would want to kill and stuff to win a taxidermy competition.

It didn't get caught in its throat which is a good thing, thats the main way i would expect something to die from eating something to large. I don't know how the body would go about digesting something like that. But it wouldn't be very toxic, so it would probably be ok.

Considering most murders go unreported in dallas, I'm not so sure.
Maybe if I had stolen a bike from a rich kid in the park. Or sold one of the rich kids drugs. That would have been in the news.
But death? eh.

Even though I don't like birds or badgers I wouldn't hurt them.
I understand you're feeling bad, but this sounds to me like a depression trigger you're using on yourself to bring on feelings of hurt and pain and grief since the incident happened long time ago.
I don't know what to say to make you feel better.

You could be right. I just watched a natural disaster show on PBS and a lot of things died. I'm probably depressed about that.
The thing that's been driving me nuts about it is I just don't know what happened to the poor thing. Every few months the memory resurfaces.
I really don't agonize over it but I keep wondering what could've happened to it. It's the uncertainty that's the problem.
In texas we hunt and fish and stuff (even people from the suburbs) so I'm pretty used to the idea of animals dying. Just not unintentionally or for such a dumb reason.
Also the LSD probably burned the experience in my head and what I'm experiencing is really a flashback to an emotional event (that I found riotously funny at the time, incidentally).

Swans are pretty used to swallowing things whole i think. Because they don't have teeth which are good at mashing things up like we do.

If this is what you were concerned about, don't worry. A plastic bottle cap will not kill a swan due to toxicity.
It probably had a hell of a time passing that bottle cap out the other end though.

I killed a swan once. No question, it was dead.
Here's the scene...I was somewhere between the ages of 9-11, can't remember exactly (those years seem to blur together for me), and I was out tooling around a lake on a rowboat. I see this swan pair swimming, and I stopped rowing and just kinda watched them swimming around. They swam closer to me, and the male took flight. At me. It was diving at me and pecking at my face/head repeatedly. I tried rowing away, and it kept following me, so I stopped rowing and pulled out of the oars. The next time it swooped, I swung the oar and hit it in the neck. Definitely broke the neck. Killing migratory birds is a felony, so I pushed it's body into the mud under the water and called it a day.
Swans are assholes.

Swans are assholes.

In Britain, the Queen is "Seigneur of the Swans", which means "Lord of the Swans" and up until 1998 it was still treason to kill one. They have enjoyed Royal status since the 12th century apparently. I heard that you're not allowed to kill and eat a swan without her permission or without obtaining a Masters Degree from Oxford or Cambridge or something. Heh

ok... look, come on... swans and geese are not assholes.. they are just misunderstood. they get that unfortunate reputation only because they don't flee at first sight of humans like the lesser water fowl do. they are brave and courageous, and they hold their ground, and more often than not, they'll even be the aggressor.
would you hold your ground against something 15x your size? hm?
they are the elite of the water fowl. the lions of the lake. they have earned their place and should be respected.
i walk to a nearby park often to feed swans, geese, and other water fowl and i treat them with complete respect, they waddle up to me and eat gently from my hand. it really is a magical experience.

Aggressive = asshole. Sorry, you're wrong. If they ate human meat, maybe you'd have a point with your lion analogy, but they're aggressive because they're fearful, not because they're hunting.
