Chicken of the woods, conifer substrate question
    #8374923 - 05/07/08 08:52 PM (5 months, 2 days ago)

So I realize chicken of the woods prefers conifers, but I'm not sure which tree would be my best bet. I know mushrooms that prefer hardwoods do best on aspen, alder and the like. Are there some specific conifers that I should be looking for? I have access to white pine mostly, but that is some sappy stuff and I'm not sure if that would fly or not...

I've found most of my chicken of the woods on hardwoods. I have read that mushrooms found on high tannin wood can cause stomach upset; however, my parents found and ate a large chicken growing from a jack pine and had no complaints.

There are different species. L. sulphureus is a hard-wood lover. I think fungi-perfecti's "Chicken of the Woods" is more likely to take to conifers, considering it's a different species and his huntin grounds
