Who Are You? What Did You Dream of Becoming as a Kid?

I remember a conversation I had with a friend a while back.

She told me that what you dream of growing up to be as a young kid is a relection of who you really are and what your spirit is all about. Where it has been, what it knows, where it belongs...

She asked me what I wanted to become as a kid, but I couldn't remember...

The conversation continued. But after a few minutes I finally remembered!

I wanted to be an astronaut/astronomer.

She said she wanted to be a pilot.

She said that explains why we both want to know whats 'out there'. And why we feel that we need to know about what's 'out there' as much as we need to know about ourselves. It's like oxygen for us.

Unfortunately neither of us pursued our early childhood dreams. I am, however, quite grateful that I have been able to remember this and understand that my passion for the stars was with me since the beginning.

I seriously had f-ed up delusional fantasies of being Wolverine from X-Men and Subzero from Mortal Kombat, which explains a lot cause I became real bitter as en early teen...hmmm...yea I played a lot of video games and day dreamed a lot.

I did too.

Try to think of something apart from the non-sense that is the magical colour box. My father regrets to this day ever giving my sister and I a nintendo for christmas. He said it was one of the worst decisions he ever made in his life. My half-brother & sisters that currently live with him don't have a TV and no video games.

And they are some cool kids, I tell ya!

A ballerina, professional figure skater, artist and writer. :grin: I definitely planned to be all 4 at once, though I obviously hadn't considered that there are only 24 hours in each day.

When I grew up I wanted a beard and long hair. Not only that but I have a bong, 12 string, vaporiser, and LOADS OF WEED.

I have surpassed all my goals.

I wanted to be a professional football player or a fighter jet pilot when I was a kid.

At 10 years old I stumbled on a patch of Cannabis in the woods behind our apartments, which was very rare where I grew up.
I was surprised when my Dad told me there are some plants we are not allowed to grow, I decided then and there I would someday.

And when I was 11 I first saw audio waveforms on a first gen Macintosh, I knew even then somehow they would become a huge part of my life.

Most of my childhood dreams have come true but in strange ways I didn't expect. I am grateful.

I was an ambitious kid and I wanted to be all of the following in roughly the order presented, with a little back and forth or simultaneity:

Ballerina
to work at McDonalds (for free food)
Teacher
Paleontologist
Entomologist
Marine Biologist
Archaeologist
Anthropologist
Politician
Musician/Writer
Philosopher/Mystic

Now I'm studying anthropology, archaeology and philosophy and I sort of dabble in writing and music projects. Funny how you just know what you love at such a young age. For years as a teenager I thought I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I really did know all along!

I really wanted to be a detective for awhile. This was a result of my fascination with "Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego." That game rocked my adolencent socks.

I wanted to be a shaman, although I didn't know there was a word for it at the time. I remember looking at the clouds trying to make them move, or looking in the mirror and making myself disappear. I also wanted to be a clown for a small time.

Astronaut was high on the list for awhile. I remember enjoying reading about space and watching Apollo 13. Nowadays I'm edging more and more toward the mystic category.

I wanted to be like my parents mostly.

I loved the prospects of everything and saw myself happy in any situation which in turn just made me hard about soft things

I saw myself in sports, science, religion, solitude, art...I saw myself on Earth!

I am practical like a hammer now, but as a kid I hit my thumb all the time on everything without even having a hammer...I became exhausted and fell asleep dreaming about hammers

My mom says I used to talk about wanting to become a teacher with 13 kids and in my free time I would be a professional golfer.

Since I finished college I sort of considered doing something relating to education and creativity but it hasn't really panned out so far.

Also not much of a golf fan.

I'm jumping in here without reading anything, but I never dreamed of being anything as a kid. I guess just being as old as my dad back then or just "grown up" seemed inconceivable.

I still don't understand it. I would gladly give up my career and just be a hobbyist/traveler/adventurer/discoverer/thinker, but I guess some people actually prefer to be confined to a particular discipline? I don't get it.
