Well today I sent payment to the guy. I bought the microscope and I am wondering, for all of you who have microscopes or know a lot about them. Is this a really good one. was it worth the scratch?
From what I can tell it is a badass. But I didn't know if this one was a good one. I know it isn't totally brand name like Zeiss or nikon.

beer = amber-yellow liquid with bubbles wine = colored liquid

I'm jealous though. I really want a scope.

I'd be checkin out everything.. paper, plants, crystals.
It'd nice to have a microscope powerful enough to allow you to tweak your re-crystallization skills down at the microscopic level

That is the exact same scope I have, except that mine is the trinocular model with a camera on the third eye.
I like it a lot and would recommend it to others.
You can still take pics by holding up a camera to the eyepiece.
GGreatone234 also has the same scope.
Don't make the same mistake as everyone else does and use the included mountant (smells like pine trees) as immersion oil. The stuff they include with a scope is for putting under the slide, not on top!
Get some slides and immersion oil and maybe a stain while you are waiting for it to come in the mail.
Also get this book: http://www.amazon.com/How-Identify-Mushrooms-Genus-III/dp/0916422097
It is like a manual for your scope that is focused on how to use it to view fungi.
Also there is a lot of good information in this thread:

Cool. Thanks guys. I thought it was a hell of a deal. I looked around and was hoping it was good. I saw that there wasn't much time left and I thought, shit I just got paid, I better get this one. Maybe never get another deal like that again. So money will be tight for a while but I can manage. I was a boyscout.
speaking of cameras, can't you but a trinocular later and in the meantime can I just use my Canon PowerShot S3 IS in on of the viewers? If so how do I get that going. I have been looking for what I need but I am unsure. I really would like to take pictures with it.
I am SO FREAKING GLAD. I can't beleive I got a hell of a deal. I have been wanting one for a long time. I used to have a crappy one when I was a kid. I looked at all kinds of stuff, hair, blood, boogers (it was awesome), water (not as cool as a thought). I am going to go out and get samples of everything I can. Have you ever looked at the back of a 20 dollar bill?
Have you ever looked a 20 dollar bill on WEED? How about high and with a microscope?
Man I am going to get my house apart looking for anything.
I haven't been this excited about a new toy since, I can't remember.
Now I have to wait till it gets here next week some time.

Nice. I will have to do that.

What do you mean here. What is wrong with the mountant, what should I get instead? And why do I not use it. Is there a different formulation that works better for what WE do? Where is the stuff they give you supposed to go. I am a little confused I guess.
So a typical slide is a glass layer, with the standard slide being just a flat sheet of glass. Then you can/should put the specimen shield, which is a piece that is a smaller square of flat glass to mount the specimen. Usually that preserves the slide better. So I guess I don't get what you mean by under the slide. I am glad you said something because I would have put it on top of the ol' slide and gone to town on it. But if you don't use it like a normal slide would be setup... then I would have messed something up super badly.
Quote:

I can't wait. I am thinking about getting some of those slide kits that they have of different things from from flora to fauna. From liver to chloroplast. It has been a long ass time since I talked about gram positive versus gram negative. I guess I will have to go back and re-read everything. I remember vaguely that certain bacteria exhibit a certain shap/composure and only certain ones stain certain ways determines what king of bacteria it is. Like the strep. virus is coiled I think and is gram possitive I think? Now I have a ton of reading to do. I wish I didn't just spend all my money on this thing, now I want that book.
And actually. A while back I was really getting close to ordering a scope for more money and less features. I was like screw it I will wait till I get some more money. So I bought some slides already. They are a single sided single well slide. I think I got a small box of them. Yeah, there are 12 of them. Damnit, I wish I could pick this thing up, and that is was only like a few block away. Instead it is coming from way the hell away and there is no delivery on weekends.

I guess every aspect of mycology is all about it. PATIENCE. Wether it be waiting for you stuff to pin or waiting for your supplies to come in.
Oh and to whoever asked how much I got it for. It was 177 I think plus like 25 bucks for shipping. so like sub 200. Probably right at around there anyways.

Haha man I was the exact same way. One of those plastic Toys R Us microscopes. Actually had 2 because the red one with the mirror wasn't good enough, had to have the blue one with a light. I'll have to see if I still have it.
I definitely have to get one of those. I just got a new apartment in a building that was built in the 1870s. I bet I can find all kinds of crazy stuff. I can just imagine when friends walk in and see a glass ware set on the shelf and a microscope on the desk next to the computer.

I think Alan is saying that the oil included is not immersion oil. When viewing over 1000X you have to use oil because water isn't able to refract light the right way. I'm guessing the oil that comes with it is for the gears that move the slide stage.
As far as mounting slides goes... The slide is a piece of glass roughly 2.5in long and .75in wide. It's maybe 1mm thick. Thats where you put your specimen, right in the middle. Once your specimen is on there you get a cover slip. A cover slip is a square, very very thin piece of glass that goes on top of the specimen. Slide goes on the stage cover slip side up on this type of scope. Do some reading on it, there's a technique to everything in microscopy. I'm going to have to do some reading on oil immersion myself, I've only done it a few times.

So you got the other one he had? Or what? That guy had a couple up for sale.
I can't wait. I had to sit there all day at work thinking about the damn thing. I work at a hospital so that made it worse. Tomorrow I have to clean the hospitals lab. I have to walk by their brand new Nikon microscope that has all the bells and whistles. I know the night lab guy. I always bullshit with him. The last weekend I had to work he worked the same one. So he called me in the lab and had to show me all the cool shit that thing did.
They bought the demo model from the company they got it from. He said the old microscope was going out and they needed a new one but he didn't think that this microscope would have passed the red tape. But when he saw that they got it he was excited as shit.
It has a motorized stage and all that. Then it had the super stage deal. It had the Dark Field and the light field and like 2 other modes or whatever. That thing is super nice. I wish it were mine.

Yeah, I got it from the same guy you did.
I know what you mean about crazy scopes. I work with almost every microscope but an electron microscope.
Here is some fluorescence microscopy that we did:
