other organisms and consciousness

ok so i was having a big arguement about whether trees, amoebas and really everything else other than animals, have a consciousness or not. i argued that they do, e.g. amoebas sense and respond to their surronding environment, and plants send out chemical signals when they are under attack from, for example, caterpillars, to predators of caterpillars to attract them.
So what are peoples opinions?

damn, i didn't really want to. aware of ones' self and surroundings, and perhaps the ability to make choices.

They are definitely aware in some sense for the very reasons you stated. As for consciousness, it is an absolutely open question since indeed we don't even know what it is and there's a fairly large number of diverging, converging, intersecting definitions from every fields in so many different levels and classes of abstraction. Moreover we don't have a clue how to empirically access consciousness and thus any attempt at a falsifiable theory is still out of the question. At best, NCCs, or neural correlates of consciousness, a pet peeve of many cognitive scientists, is just that, correlates; knowing where in the brain the redness of red correlates with in no way explains the subjective experience of it.
This is my opinion.

of course they do, their living beings. To me trees resemble the vein system of the earth, this planet is more then just a home for humans and animals. its an actual creature that grows and has a symbiotic relationship with every thing.
