I am sorry I am strongly anti weed I do mushrooms and make a
lot of money at my job and do well at life and I have to say I owe some of it to shrooms. Shrooms are like my mom that tells me I have been fucking up and makes me get my life in order.

My brother and other people I know who sit around on their couch wondering why their lives suck while smoking weed for the last ten years. O and then they go on and on about how great it is and how they are not addicted.

yep, pot is definatly a powerful addiction for some, but so what?

I don't think the state has any right to interfere in private matters, and they certainly don't have the right to tax me for futile interdiction efforts.

The huge spending, I think something like 50 billion, directly related to drug war crap in the USA is a waste, and immoral.

It can't be said with any certainty that those w/ marijuana addictions wouldn't find another pursuit to waste time on, and its of no consequence anyways. You have no right to demand economic benifts from them, nor they you, and this includes things like lost productivity and stuff commonly cited.

That's allready been addressed in this thread, and the answer is it will probably die in committee

You can check the status of the bill by clicking here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR05843:@@@X

As has been discussed, however; if you click on that link to see the status you will be raided by the DEA, so its a toss up.

Even added this to the letter

"Personal note: Drug related crime is a huge issue. If a drug dealer gets ripped off by a customer or other drug dealer, this creates a potentially violent or deadly scenario. By taking away the incentive to illegally sell marijuana, and getting it out of the black market, we can put a big dent in violent crime.

Sincerely,

Raymond Kendall

PS: I believe marijuana is no more dangerous than your average perscription painkiller. There is no way to overdose on it either. If possible I'd like to see some new, modern tests done on THC's effects on the human body. It is responsible to make a decision regarding marijuana's legal status based on factual evidence. Right now there isn't enough reliable evidence from reliable studies to make any law about the legality of marijuana."

I got a letter back today from the PA rep Bill Shuster. It says...

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 5843, the Act to Remove Federal Penalties for the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults. I appreciate hearing from you and having the benefit of your views.

As you may know, H.R. 5843 would remove most federal penalties for the posession of marijuana for personal use. It would also remove criminal penalties for the non-for-profit transfer of marijuana for personal use. H.R 5843 has been referred to the House Committees on Enerfy and Commerce and on the Judiciary. Please be assured I will keep your reviews in mind should this legislation come before me for a vote in the full House of Representatives.

Again, thank you for contacting me. For your convenience, you can recieve further information on issues important to the Ninth District at http://www.house.gov/shuster. Your thoughts and comments are always welcome.

Dear Mr. whatsgrimace:

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 5843, a bill to remove federal penalties for the personal use of marijuana by adults. It is good to hear from you, and I apologize for the delay in my response.

As you may be aware, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations' Uniform Crimes Report for 2005, there have been over eight million cannabis arrests in the United States since 1993, including 786,545 arrests in 2005. Marijuana users have been arrested at the rate of 1 every 40 seconds, with about 88 percent of all marijuana arrests being for possession - not production or distribution. Additionally, the rate of marijuana use in the United States, where the drug is banned, is far higher than in the Netherlands, where possession has been decriminalized, and the United States imprisons more people for drug offenses than European Union (EU) countries imprison for all offenses, even though EU countries have 100-million more citizens.

Until 1937, consumption and sale of cannabis was legal in most U.S. states, though an increasing number of states had begun to outlaw it. The 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, was one of the cornerstone bills that led to the criminalization of cannabis. While the Act did not criminalize the possession or use of cannabis, it levied a tax equaling roughly one dollar on anyone who dealt commercially in marijuana. Additionally, violations of the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, could result in a fine of up to $2000 and five years imprisonment. The expense and net effect, which was extremely high for the time, led people to stop openly buying and making marijuana. The 1961 international treaty known as the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs was the piece of legislation that eventually prohibited all non-medical, non-scientific cannabis use.

In the 1970s, a movement started in the United States that led states like Oregon, Colorado, Alaska, Ohio, California, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, and Nebraska to decriminalize marijuana. Decriminalization is a drug supply-side control strategy that discourages users, but largely removes them from the criminal justice system, while imposing stiff penalties on those who traffic and sell the drug on the black market. Since the early 1970s, cannabis reform advocates have sought to have the Drug Enforcement Administration reschedule cannabis and remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, the most tightly restricted category of drugs.

H.R. 5843 would not alter the legal status of marijuana as a Schedule I drug. In addition, this bill does not affect state or local laws and regulations or create obstacles that would prevent major drug dealing. Rather, this bill seeks to end the current conflict that exists between state and federal laws in order to allow states to decide on marijuana policy for themselves. H.R. 5843 removes federal penalties for the possession of 100 grams or less of marijuana for personal use, or for the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce or less of marijuana between adults for personal use. The bill allows a civil penalty of up to $100 to be charged for the personal use of marijuana. H.R. 5843 has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce and the House Judiciary Committees, on which I serve. Please know that I will keep your views in mind should H.R. 5843 or similar legislation come before me in the House of Representatives.

Again, thank you for sharing your views. Your opinion matters to me. If I can be of service to you in any other way, please do not hesitate to let me know. As a security precaution, all mail sent to Congress is first irradiated. This process causes significant delays. To ensure the fastest response, I encourage all constituents who have access to the internet to contact me through my website at http://tammybaldwin.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Tammy Baldwin
Member of Congress

This opinion is based on? Have you ever seen someone going on a bad trip? I only trip when things are going well in my life and I'm relatively stress-free already. I smoke weed when the opposite is true to relax.

Quote:

Alcohol is the most destructive force in many of my friends lives, so should we just ban it? Drugs affect different people differently. I know pot smokers who are also lawyers, engineers, doctors and athletes.

I would like to never see weed even become close to being legal

If that opinion is based on a few of your stoner friends, that's pretty lame.

Quote:

That's a bit hypocritical, don't you think? So, shrooms are OK, but god forbid you smoke weed! :cuckoo: Where is the logic in that?

The problem isn't whether or not you or I choose to use marijuana, shrooms, alcohol, whatever. The problem is the government taking away that choice.

The reply from my congressman:

Quote:

Dear Mr. FooMan:

Thank you for contacting my office expressing your support for the legalization of marijuana. While I appreciate your concerns regarding the enforcement priorities of our federal agents, and our federal budget priorities, I do not support illegal drug use. I do however firmly support the ability of physicians to prescribe medical marijuana for people with terminal illnesses or other appropriate medical conditions.

As you are aware, the Supreme Court recently ruled that the Justice Department can continue to prosecute state-authorized medical marijuana patients for violating the federal Controlled Substance Act. In response, I voted in favor of an amendment to the Justice Department Appropriations bill that would have prohibited the Department of Justice from prosecuting patients who use marijuana in compliance with state law. The Supreme Court's ruling did not alter the state and local laws exempting qualified medical marijuana patients from state penalties, and as a result, I voted in favor of the Hinchey-Rohrbacher amendment so that these law-abiding patients could use their medication without fear of federal prosecution.

In addition to voting for the Hinchey-Rohrbacher amendment, I have joined with a number of my colleagues in sponsoring H.R. 2087, the States Rights to Medicinal Marijuana Act. This bill would serve to reschedule marijuana under federal law, so that states that desire to provide for legal medicinal use of cannabis could do so without fear of federal interference. This piece of legislation is a simple, compassionate measure to afford American citizens with debilitating illnesses the ability to use their prescribed medication without fear of federal interference. It is my hope that Congress act on this legislation quickly, as recent public surveys have shown overwhelming national support for the supervised use of medicinal marijuana.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have or anytime I may be of assistance to you. I hope you will find my website (www.wexler.house.gov) a valuable resource in keeping up with events in Washington and South Florida.

With warm regards,
Robert Wexler
Member of Congress

Legalization of marijuana? Apparently he hasn't really read over the bill. At least the guy stated where he stands and didn't try to give me some bullshit "I'll think about it" type of answer.

Yeah, I like that he took a stand.

That said "I'm against illegal drug use"

This isn't about illegal drug use, this is about making a drug legal.

I wonder how many of these folks really give a shit about this bill one way or the other, and how many are just playing to their constituency. Wish there was an easy way to know.

Maybe anonymous congressional polls should be started. It would be a way for chickenshit polititicians to speak their mind on politicially hot issues w/out incurring the wrath of the constituency, and would allow the public to better measure the congress.
