so i decided i wanted to build a low cost mansion out of shipping containers. and i think that this is pretty cool. im going to try and price it out tomorrow some time.
the design somewhat looks like a pyramid with a garage carved into one face!
2200 interrior SQF 840 SQF garage/stage area 1312 sqf of balconies!
check it out! crappy lego design

rough sketches of the back and side views.

im not 100 percent sure on the abilitiy for these shipping containers to be able to support eachother, but i do know that they are capable of being stacked 4 high, and are very heavy duty, so we shall see!
any input is appreciated.

I like the philosophy, but I think the practicality might be limited.
How about electricity, central air, and plumbing? How is that going to work out?

well, im not quite sure yet, it will depend on where the individual sleeping quarters are located. each floor will probably have one central dorm style bathroom/shower facility, next to that will be a kitchen facility so that water and gas can be centralized. perhaps along one of the side walls.
as for electric, i would probably build in a diesel generator so that this can be off the grid. power will be in each "room" and there will probably be a central air conditioner for each floor with living space, mounted on the respective balconies..
as for water, a holding tank will be mounted on the ground next to the propane tank, and most likely the diesel storage tank(for the generators)

One word of advice.... coverage!
Shipping containers are solid 1/4" thick steel. Once they sit in the sun for an hour, they turn in ovens.
Design a pretty canopy over your "house" or some kind of cover. If not, you'll get hot, very hot.
Also, make sure that there are sufficient air holes. Shipping containers are air tight. If you close a door and get locked in you can suffocate.
Besides that, you should look here - http://www.fabprefab.com/fabfiles/containerbayhome.htm
Have fun, Lana

I have had an idea much similar to this one, although i was planning on putting them underground.
Being underground will eliminate most of your heating and cooling, also allows for cisterns to be set up, and frees up the sq footage of land that a house would normally take up. This can then be used however one wishes, i would personally opt for solar heated water, and possibly a vertical turbine for wind power based right above the house.
Also, for the interior of the containers, i would cut holes, 30" / 6', for doors into the adjoining container, and 4'/4' in the ceiling of one for a spiral stair case into the upper/lower floors.
Then for the walls i would probably use 1" to 2" firing strips, fir out all the walls, and sheet rock them, reduces echo, and allows for hanging/mounting of fixtures, alows you to paint the walls, and allows spacing between the container and sheet rock for plumbing, HVAC and electricity, phone, and LAN. the ceilings would most likely receive the same treatment, but reinforced in area if any ceiling fans, or somewhat heavy fixtures go on the ceiling.
And you can use construction grade adhesive to glue the strips to the metal, and then just use sheet rock screws for the walls.
But for adequate ventilation, one may need to box out further than the 1-2" to allow for at least a 4-5" ducting.
But if one is going to bury a 3 tier container system, thats a big ass hole, and you would most likely have to finish ALL of the interior and furnishings BEFORE you cover the house, because spiral staircases' do not lend them selves much to moving things.
Though, you could you another stair system, the spiral would be the most space saving.
Also the whole structure would need to be ABSOLUTELY water tight, some thing like 4 sheets of 6 mil plastic on the ground, containers on it, fold them up, and drape another 4 sheets over the whole structure all the way to the ground, over lapping the base sheets, so the water can just run off, and below the house.
Also be wary of low water tables, or build a shorter house.
And for an entrance, you could either enter though the ceiling of the top tier, have the top tier above ground, or chose to build a water tight tunnel leading to the bottom floor.
And as i think on this, one may just want to cut out all of the adjoining walls of one floor, and frame out your floor plan thus being able to take full advantage of the floor space. though you will have to put in load bearing supports, and weld the whole structure together for the support you would lose from the removal of the steal walls.
All in all its quite feasible, though its quite a project.
