... imagine all the funk greats getting a make over and in technicolor with plush dirty orange shag carpeting surrounding an afro with platform shoes on.... and you might have an idea of what this album sounds like.

ha! while I have the utmost respect for P-funk, you need to figure out who had their soudn before they did.
look up stanley clark and George Duke and listen to Dukey Stick. then go listen to the Meters (aka. the fathers of funk).
plus, George Clinton sucks in his old days and Parlaiment was always inferior to Funkadelic. Their best work was Take it to the Stage which was hardly indicitave of the P-funk sound.

Please, as you know I suck Wooten's dick, so you think I'm unaware of Stanley Clark? Let's be fucking reasonable. And I just saw PFunk, so I'm well aware of what Clinton is in his old age. Either way, you can't fucking beat Maggot Brain, I don't care if Clinton didn't fucking play it, he inspired it. Flashlight, Cosmic Slop, and One Nation Under a Groove are still awesome. I'll check out this new Lettuce album tomorrow though. (And yes, Funkadelic is way fucking funkier and better than Parliament, but don't bring that up to the average music fan, they still think they're both one in the same.)
I finally listened to some Mr. Bungle the other day, by the way. Fucking weird shit man, not sure what my final take is on it yet.

Well if he didn't read it, let him know. Syracuse over the summer, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, awesome show, play our jazzfest again and I can get him some (not from me, but he'll get some.)
oh, I forgot to mention that some songs on the album are covers... but they are done up lettuce style.
it might not be so boring, the cow, if you would turn down the puddle of mudd and give the album a real listen.

Kind of Blue is great, but Ive heard it too many times. I havent listened to that album in a while. A love Supreme is good also, but I like out to lunch better

I wasnt making fun of pfunk, just stating that they are overrated in the sense that bob marley is overrated by "reggaephiles" who dont even know who peter tosh is.
yes, the sum and the parts are all amazing in pfunk, but it isnt the beggining and end of funk by any means. The guy on the drums, adam deitsch, is absolutely amazing (and white btw!) in lettuce, and is pretty much enough of a reason to buy the album.
I mean, from the top three albums you got listed, it soudns like you are about two steps away from become a john cage fan boi. "listen to that composition! it doesnt even sound like he pulled notes out of a bag!".
and what was interesting about Pfunk? crack smoking? the mothership gimmicks? bootsie? did you really listen to the lettuce album, or did you really try to make some sort of well formed opinion on listening to amazon samples?

A John Cage fanboi please. You make it sound like a negative to be into music that doesnt fit standard chord progressions we've been using since the 1600's. And yes I do like John Cage, I also like anton webern, prokofiev, stockhausen and most other people that you would write off
PFunk was interesting because they werent just your average we play funk, band. It was story driven, and the music sounded like a party already. Bootsie tore it up on the bass, and all the albums had an extremely loose feeling to them. Other funk is funky alright, but theres no sense of originality like in pfunk. I can appreciate someone good at the drums, but after a while you realize that they are just playing repetitive rhythms with boring chord changes. PFunk is one of the only funk bands who sounded fresh
I believe John Cage once gave a "show" at juliard where he sat down at the piano in an auditorium full of eager composition students. he stood back up and knocked the lid support out and it crashed down. the end. half the people were clapping, half of them were intelligent and wondered wtf.
ohhh... the father of chance music. how can you praise work that was merely notes arbitrarily pulled out of a bag? or pigeons on power lines? existential composition is good for idle chat, but beyond that there is little to no artistic quality in it, nor does it surpass the "mundane chord progression" of all other music.
especially 4'33". gotta really respect the work he is most famous for. He squeeks by on fringe esoterics like yourself that are constantly searching for that dada revolution so they can be the first to see the emporers new clothes.
as for Pfunk, I can agree that they were a great band, but they didnt invent funk, hell they didnt even invent their sound. Seriously, nothing is truly new in music, not even the gimmicks. I believe in some interviews clinton cites his sources for all the costumes and stage antics: Peter Gabriel.
also, Pfunk became the "xerox" (brand name) for funk because they had so many cameos in other avenues. I mean, how many people dont know what george clinton looks like? anyone with the game NBA jams should. or anyone that watched PCU. my point is: your opinion on this is severly limited because of overexposure to one band, and minimal exposure to everyone else.... the marley syndrome. How many times have you seen a Sly and the Family stone concert? do you know what sylvester stewart looks like?
could you even name a song by the meters? (well anyoen can with the internet in front of them).... tower of power....the isley brothers....

Oh what a surprise, bring up all the non music that John Cage wrote. Im sorry you are unaware of this, but he has a huge repeotoire of varied and interesting music for ensembles, chamber music, solo piano, percussion, he has some very interesting and nice music. But how shocking it is to hear you bring up 4'33.

Sly and the Family Stone are good, but they are not as funky as PFunk. I never said they invented funk, you just constantly want to flex your musical muscle. 70's kool and the gang, sly stone (Fresh! is my favorite, btw), ohio players, graham central station, the meters, bros johnson,... those are great funk bands. also, check out a james brown live show called Love, Power, Peace. it's from 1971, iirc, which means bootsy and catfish collins are in the rhythm section.
with the lettuce album... i cant really put my finger on it. it has all the main ingredients, it just doesnt have that nasty grit that covers great funk. it's good, but not great.

I never said I disliked music because it was popular. my point is that people think if something is new to them, it must be revolutionary and original. How many times do I have to say in this thread that I enjoy and like Pfunk before you stop claiming that I am thumbing my nose at them? I think you are confusing music appreciation with music pretention. I understand that I come off as pretentious in my posts... I mean it that way, but when it comes down to it, I actually just have spheres of deeper appreciation for certain artists, which doesnt neccessarily mean exclusion from listening and enjoying other artists. On the other hand, I am pretentious when it comes to talking to other people about music, because more often than not I have far more exposure and knowledge of music. I especially abhor people who think that they can argue with me about certain genres of music when they can only pull household names out their ass and try to claim that it is the keystone of the genre.
now this is the first post where you actually gave some sort of description of your reason for dissent... even if it was in the very last line. I dont have any problem with it. I can respect that statement... but "meh, they are so-so... no pfunk" is something that is seriously retarded. Im just glad I dont have the problem of becoming absorbed by a band so much that I begin to let their style dictate how I perceive music that is similar.
now as for John Cage... what did you think I meant by the term "John Cage" fan boi? i know he has "real" music... and there are (very few) songs of his that I enjoy, but you have to admit he is the poster child for existential composition which is always at best, a nice quip or jeopardy answer. "oh, did you know that john cage sold tapes with erase heads after the play heads so that you only listened to the song once".... type shit. and by preying on being so esoterically vague, you inevitably draw the emporers tailors who will say that 4'33" is so deep that it is a statement about Absolute Zero.. but given enough obsession and deliberation about any "art peice" you can extrapolate some "deeper meaning".
but back to funk, I have no problem with the dissent as long as it is explained. I prefer technical prowess over stage gimmicks. I prefer epic full sounds rather than storyline melodies.
