 Plese remove picture upload limits

There is a limit to the number of pictures people can upload. If someone has posted a lot of pictures, each time they post a new one, one from the past is erased.
These pictures are important, many of the pictures represent valuable contributions to mycology and should not be erased just because someone has more pictures to share.
Many old posts about rare Psilocybe species have pictures that are forever lost for various reasons.
The size limit is too small - When studying mushrooms, small details are very important. With the large size of new monitors, cameras and hard drives these days it makes sense to allow uploads of high resolution images.
When attempting to identify rare psilocybin mushrooms that are often unknown to science it is extremely important to have a detailed image. With todays cameras it is easy to turn on macro mode and get amazing high resolution images of any mushroom. It is really important to let them do that!
Many people are hosting images on external servers for these reasons, but that causes other problems. There is no guarantee that the image hosting server will be around and still serve the same image in 5 years. Also sometimes these third parties doesn't like one of the images and rm's the account, removing thousands of images of rare psilocybin mushrooms.

Hi Alan,
I do see what you're saying but you must understand that the current limits are not due to us being arbitrary or capricious but rather indicate an attempt to manage our resources responsibly. On our server, images use the most disk space and bandwidth by far: last month 39.5% of our bandwidth went to GIFs and another 27.7% to JPEGs. Given our current hosting contract, it costs us $448.90/month to accommodate this existing image traffic. And that is after steps like aggressive caching, offsite leech protection and automatic lossless optimization through software like gifsicle. We may increase the limit at some point in the future to keep pace with technological progress, but I wouldn't hold your breath. For the time being I would recommend offsite hosting (try bayimg if you want liberal terms of use) or else sign up as a supporter which now gives you 50% more space to store images.

or you could invest in a home server and host your own photo database. this way the pics you put on it are on your ow terms and they will stay for the life of your server.

i havent noticed this, then again i havent really looked, if this is true it is most upsetting.
how about this idea admins? allow members to purchase extra space for pictures.

Pictures should never be automatically erased, I assume he meant that sometimes you might need to delete a file to make room for a new upload.
And you do get extra space for pictures when you become a supporter, it goes from 50MB total to 75MB. Or did you mean beyond that?

yeah i mean, i dont know how much space i have used, but im sure when i hit my limit i would like the option to extend it further. im not sure what would be financially feasible for you as far as that, maybe an extra $5 a month for a certain amount like 25mb? just an example, i know nothing of websites, servers and memory loads.

bandwidth generally means a rate(Mb/s), not an amount (GB or TB)
Either you want to know monthly transfer or average (or 95th%) bandwidth

I often refer to things in my own way. Yeah I was referring to the monthly transfer usage. I should use more professional terms since I am a web designer.

Would it be possible to increase the 24 hour upload limit? Perhaps it could be changed to a 48 hour or weekly limit.
I only post pics in Mushroom Hunting a couple times a month, but I often have to post in installments due to the 24 hour upload limit. I think it's a common problem amongst users in the hunting forum.

Okay I made it a seven day limit instead of a 24 hour limit, hopefully this will be a little more convenient. Please let me know if you notice any problems.

Your weekly upload limit is 14,336 KB. Supporters get 10,240 KB!
I am sure that is still daily but it might discourage new members from becoming supporters.
