The man at the store was very nice, but wouldn't tell me how to grow my button because it was "drug containing".
How should I go about planting this? Small pot? soil? Water?
I really don't know anything about growing cactus I just bought this because it was so cute.

is that peyote? where did you get it? i can't think of any cacti that likes rich or dense soil, or tons of moisture(as in sopping wet soil)
i grow peruvian torch and pedro and a few others
i like to give them the biggest container possible, proportioned to their size of course, a bigger container gives them free root run, which is good, preferably one that is both deep and wide
i make my own soil using lava rock, manure, peat moss(or coco coir), a little hummus and worm castings, with a little bit of blood meal and pelletized gypsum
ratios are about 70% lava rock( or maybe sand, never used it,but looks like your cactus is small so maybe sand would be better than lava rock due to size) and 30% equal parts of manure and peat moss or coco coir with a little hummus and worm castings, and just a little bit of blood meal and gypsum
use a liquid fertilizer meant for cacti once about every 3 week, putting a tsp liquid soap/gallon will help fertilizers soak into roots and will not harm the plant

lol he wouldnt tell you how to grow it. i guess he figured if you have a true desire to do mescaline you will put in the legwork and research yourself. or hes just a dick. i would have bought another button of something similar but not containing mesc and ask him how to grow that one. good luck!

The guy at the store was a nice fellow. He is just prudent about what he says to customers. I get the impression a lot of uninformed people walk in off the street, wanting to buy ethnos, then asking how to use them. Also some guy tried to score weed off me while i was in there. This is very common in Toronto. I had a friend who managed a grow shop. When I would go by his store to chat someone would usually come in asking for a dime every 10-15 minutes. (Edit for 2nd poster)-the button was 40-45. I don't really remember. I dunno if that is a good price or not but I wanted it, so I bought it. I would hate waiting for a cactus to arrive in the mail.
Plus I bought some P-torch skin at the same time, so although cacti are legal here(and peyote are specifically legal even though they contain mescaline which is illegal), I don't blame him for being less than forthcoming with certain info.
Plus that's why wonderful places like this exist.
So I gather I need special cactus soil? Other than that I can just take care of it as normal? Like if I: Put it in a small pot. Water, but don't drown it. Leave it on my windowsill(how much light?). Will it be relatively happy?

Let it dry out completely between waterings. The firmness of the cactus will help you identify if you overwater or underwater. Buying a cactus soil at your local nursery would be fine (though I don't recommend Miracle Gro brand).
Since you're new to it, I'd advise you to underwater as a rule. When you think it's time to water just hold off a bit and see how the cactus responds.
As for light a windowsill might work but I've not tried it. Lots of people use HID lighting for their indoor cacti or depending on their local climate take their cacti outdoors and bring them indoors if it gets near freezing.

So I am getting cactus soil today(fuck miracle grow), and I will plant my button. I'll give it a little water, and leave it to dry out.
For now I'm just gonna put it in a sunny place on my desk. More info on HID lighting would be cool. I'm feeling like I can maybe put it outside during the summer and wait on buying a light. It'd be nice to know how much they are though.
They seem like very hardy plants(the guy just had them sitting in a plastic thing unplanted).
Also is This a good mesc extract tek? or is there a more up to date one I should know about.
These are my very first experiments with cacti, so I really appreciate the help guys.

I have no intention of eating my peyote. Not for quite a while at least. I should have been more specific, but I also got some p-torch skin. Having never tried mescaline I figured it was worth a go. However I'm a little freaked out by the extraction tek. The warning at the beginning kinda makes me feel like me or my roommate might blow the house up accidentally by smoking weed at the wrong time during the process. I'm probably just being paranoid
I went to the grow shop today and they don't carry soil of any kind(go figure), let alone cactus soil. Looks like I'm going to the beach tomorrow for sand. Gonna use Gymmtymms recipe with coir instead of peat. What is the purpose of the gypsum, bloodmeal, and ....hummus? I feel like a dumbass, I doubt you mean the stuff you eat. Are these ingresients absolutely necessary? Thanks again for the help.

Use a bigger pot so it has a lot of space to grow. You also wont have to transplant it if you use a big pot. You can go to a home depot type store for cactus soil. When you first plant it, water the soil a little so the roots are in good, then wait a month before watering again.

be weary useing beach sand and wash it good before hand. if too much salt is deposited on it, it will kill your little buddy. and dont water it for 2 weeks after planting it in the dirt.

Isn't that only if it's not rooted? I got mine the other day and mixed Cactus soil and Pearlite. Planted and watered it right away. His looks rooted also. As long as it got roots it can drink the water. No roots it would just rot.

a lack of water will cause it to stretch its roots out to find more
water infrequently basically

I'd not use beach sand for the reason given above. Lophophoras don't live on beaches.
As for the soil mix there's much debate about it but I personally don't think you need to get too technical with it.

I was just replying to the advice not to water for the first 2 weeks replanting. I would think after planting a rooted specimen you'd wanna water it initially.
An Unrooted specimen you would withhold water for the first 2 weeks or until roots formed to drink up the water because without roots water would just promote rot.

Okie dokie. No beach sand.
Clearly I don't know what I'm doing. So back to buying cactus soil.
Thanks for the advice. I should have looked into this a little more before I just up and bought it. Although I'm happy I did.
I guess on some level I thought it would be easy because they were seemingly surviving in the store without any care or soil.
Silly me.
Thanks again. I feel like I'm on the right track.

Can't find cactus soil. What kind of sand do I use to make my own? And where might I find it?
