Anyone living in California, I need some info.
    #8364368 - 05/05/08 09:16 AM (8 months, 13 hours ago)

Ok so I live in Gainesville Fl. Its a shitty little town, and I cant stand it here. I really cant stand it anywhere in the south, its just not my thing.

While this town is pretty miserable for me to live in it is totally dedicated to the university of Florida, and that makes it a very easy place to live. I can ride anywhere in town at virtually any time of day or night for free, jobs are more than plentifully.

However, community college credit hour cost recently went up about 50 percent thus eliminating my only real reason to stay here. While I do love the luxury's of not having to own a car, and pretty much being able to get a decent job at the drop of a hat its starting to feel like it just isn't worth it to stay here. Ive lived in allot of other places (Houston, Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Boston) and never really had trouble getting along with anyone, I just don't seem to click with most people in the south....er maybe its just Florida.

So....I have a nice little chunk of money saved up, a good solid year of work experience in a professional environment, and my annual desire to bounce is creeping up on me like a fat chick at closing time...what to do. I getting ready to get back into school this fall and I'm not really sure I want to stay here...to be honest a day doesn't go by that I don't regret moving here. Aside from the adventure it has been moving here with no money, knowing noone this place is miserable.

I have no reservations about moving to a strange new place without knowing anyone, that shit is what I am best at, however I am getting a little older and I want to make sure wherever I do decide to move it meets all of my easy going needs. So here is what I need from you guys.

I'm looking for...
1) Excellent public transportation
2) Housing cost estimates
3) Close college proximity....preferably community for the moment.
4) General vibe
5) Job prospects
6) You couch to crash on...come on help a nigga out

Find me a great city to live in and the hash brownies are on me.

I'm doing my own independent research ala google, but I trust you all way more than some scheming "come on and move here its great" web page.

Thanks:awesome:

I've lived in Oceanside, CA/ San Diego, CA/ Memphis, Tn/ and now Knoxville, TN.... Easiest place I've found to not have to own a car is SanDiego omg so friggin easy to jump the the little trains and not pay for anything. lots of great clubs and pretty girls too. TN is greener though so that's only reason I like it plus it's where my family is. I have a few friends in Colorado that absolutely love it. anyway check out some of those places...

1) Excellent public transportation

I don't have much experience with public transportation so my opinion isn't the strongest. But the San Francisco Bay Area has a good network of public transportation given their Bart train system and many city buses/trolleys, and it seems San Diego might as well (given a previous poster's commentary). Living in Los Angeles, I've noticed our bus system improving, and it isn't too difficult to get to where you need to go (but it will take about 4 times as long compared to driving in your own car). However, I just don't use our public transit system enough to feel qualified in giving a strong conclusive statement.

2) Housing cost estimates

Expensive. Unless you live outside of major city limits, expect housing and general cost of living expenses to be relatively high with respect to the rest of the country.

3) Close college proximity....preferably community for the moment.

There are community colleges in and around every major city.

4) General vibe

Santa Cruz & San Diego would probably be my preference for this stipulation, generally speaking.

5) Job prospects

Wouldn't know as I haven't had to look for a job since high school.

6) You couch to crash on...come on help a nigga out

Sorry, my girl wouldn't have it.

Thanks for the input, but it seems this isnt going to do me much good...I'm not sure its even possible to get a good idea of a city without going there. Looks like I need to just fly out and bus myself around to a few citys to check things out for myself.

Random travel is :awesome:

my friend is really into the whole folk/punk scene and i hear gainseville is the central hub of that all, so he can't wait to move there.

isn't there a huge festival called "the fest" there every summer?

Yeah the folk/punk scene thats going on here is mostly spoiled rich kids playing poor while there parents pay for college....that shit gets real old when your from Kentucky, and your family is heavily involved with country and folk music. Fuckers!

These empty ipod toting temporary folk musicians are fucking soulless just like the rest of this town. Imagine the typical movie college town, and this is pretty much it....but the fest is pretty awesome.

If your ever in town check out Tim and Terry's.

You want a real folk/punk scene? Find some small hole in the wall piece of shit midwestern town with no prospects, and less hope. Thats where its at. Check out northern Ky. Great music, that no one will ever hear of.

I'm looking for...
1) Excellent public transportation

Get a car in Cali or live in a real big city it is not public transportation friendly...
2) Housing cost estimates

A lot, buying is better but thats even sky high, one of the highest in the country renting or buying...smaller cities better here...but 1500 a month should do it for a small place and utilities, in a smaller town thatd be for your own place, in the city you can mate up for that 1500 range...

3) Close college proximity....preferably community for the moment.

1 in every city pretty much, esp in SO cali

4) General vibe
Changes by the block...

5) Job prospects

ALL OVER, lots of jobs there but you gotta have a trade or know something,...or your just another 10 dollar employee

6) You couch to crash on...come on help a nigga out

I got tons of family and friends in Cali....from LA to bakersfield even east to Las Vegas, if your cool smoke a lotta weed drink and aint no thief I can make some calls see if anyone needs a roomy lately..., but you gotta be a person with good work/social ethic because Cali aint no joke, theres some fucked up shit in cali...

Find me a great city to live in and the hash brownies are on me.

Ill tell my Uncle that...lmao Hed love ya.

I'm doing my own independent research ala google, but I trust you all way more than some scheming "come on and move here its great" web page.

Cali can be the best and worse place on earth, I grew up in Gangsta city so I aint really missing it but I been gone a long time things have gotten worse and that keeps me away, but Bfield and north in the high desert like Apple Valley aint bad at all, if you like mexican food and stuff thats a good spot, also the heat is diff than FL...its 115 and DRY or hotter in a lot of Cali...so you know..., oh yeah can you do construction, IE framing concrete or anything like that?

Down in the southern third you also got the mountains like Big Bear or The Mt VErnon or San Gorgonio areas...all good mountain livin areas...

Anyhow thats all I can think of now, other than that you got SF and north of there which I would stay away from or the way northern woods which are cool if you want to be a real mountain man and hermit and like grow weed or something...but not a lot of real big big cities past SF besides SAC ...and they start getting fewer once you leave the south...,

Thanks

I live in San Luis Obispo, CA.

If you can afford it and don't mind living in a smaller town you should have no complaints with the beach nearby and the perfect weather.

1) Excellent public transportation
San Francisco or anywhere in the bay area. Buses up the ass and Bart which is a cleaner, faster, intercity subway
2) Housing cost estimates
Expensive as shit the closer you are to a big city
3) Close college proximity....
Colleges everywhere. Especially out in the hayward/oakland area
4) General vibe
Well, berkley is just a short bart ride away!
But chances are youll be living in a shithole where the darker your skin is the more respect you have
5) Job prospects
Dunno
6) You couch to crash on...come on help a nigga out
Well thanks to my roomates (who are actual niggas) there actually are niggas (real ones) sleeping on the couch all the time.

Good luck, I'm moving out to Cali, I've already got my plans together except transportation to Cali, I'll be living in a Cali town near a hippy community, and I hope I can live out the rest of my days meeting new people and enjoying myself without worry of persecution in Cali.

 I'm going to be a Florida refugee in Cali.

I Second that, SLO is an awesome town, plenty of buses that can take you around the city or county,

Rent is somewhat expensive but if you find some roommates its alright ie: studio 800 to 1000 per month with all utilities, with roommates prob around 500/month.

Schools - Cal Poly and Cuesta CC are very close.

The Vibe here is mixed since its a college town but there are some Frat Bro's and a lot of chill stoners. Nice small city feeling to it. Plenty of concerts downtown of all genera's

Jobs, mainly just ones that college kids can work on the side for some cash but I'm sure there are some more serious and steady ones around if you look check out this SLO Jobs

My Couch? I just moved in with some random people so I don't think it would work out but we will have a room open in our house in a couple months.

Hope this helps a little
