Ego death is like death of the mind (human mind, ego-mind) the natural ancient mind of survival is full of natural selfishness, perceived separateness, thus anger, lust, greed, hate, jealousy, they are all boiling & bubbling away just waiting to be brought to the surface, when the ego is dying it is like extinguishing the fire that keeps these things boiling, by & by the bubbling will cease...
To turn down the heat, practice sadhana, meditate etc...
To extinguish it, get rid of who says "me" "I" "mine", try to find this imaginary character, does he exist?
Complete & utter ego death is going back to emptiness, nothingness, this can seem terrifying when in a body as it is complete & utter death. Resistance & fear of this causes terrible mental suffering, all must be allowed. Just letting go is letting go of desires, attachments, ego. This is blissful, joyous, ecstatic. Realise essentially you are this nothingness, this emptiness, everything is empty, all else, all duality is springing from this emptiness, all returns to this emptiness, it was never apart.

Ego can not even be said to be bad it is just a function of consciousness when watered down into a body/mind limited by time & space, then consciousness is called "mind", this mind is bound, this mind is ego, "me" "i" "mine", i'm not condemning it, its like watching a child saying "mine mine mine!!!!" knowing it is a phase we all must pass through...
