I will never understand it.
And they won't learn from their lesson. They'll probably just figure they got the date wrong by a couple of years and get read for 2016, the REAL end of the world.

I am quite relaxed, I just used a swear word.... 
It is simple....
1) Some people (no longer living) made a calendar that had a cycle that ended on 2012....
2) The Earth has a magnetic pole that reverses (albeit, very slowly)....
3) The Sun has a magnetic pole that reverses fairly quickly (relatively) and happens to be projected for 2012....
4) People do droogs and get paranoid, think about these topics, and mix things up a bit....
You do the math....
