Hiker suffers bad trip after taking mushrooms in mountains
April 29 2008 - MercuryNews.com

LOS GATOS - Matthew Rosenberg didn't trip and break his leg Monday night in the Santa Cruz Mountains, causing an expensive search-and-rescue that began with a desperate cell phone call to his mother and ended with a police dog tracking him down about an hour later.

Instead, Rosenberg, a Los Gatos High School senior, apparently ate some hallucinogenic mushrooms, possibly dropped some acid and just "thought" he broke his leg, Capt. Bill Finch with Cal Fire's Burrell Station said Tuesday.

"He was really gorked," Finch said of Rosenberg's condition when rescuers found him standing near a rock at the bottom of a ravine - more amused and bewildered than safe and sound. "He wasn't normal. He was like one of those guys who's been drinking a lot and starts saying, 'I love ya, man.'"

But there wasn't much love going around at the Rosenberg household Tuesday.

In an interview outside his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Matthew's father, Mark Rosenberg, said "we're not sure what (punishment) it's going to be, but he probably won't get to use the car for a while."

Rosenberg, an unemployed software engineer, who's still trying to figure out what drove his only son to experiment with hallucinogenic mushrooms.

"I don't know if there was any acid involved or not," Rosenberg said.

Finch said one of Rosenberg's friends, who assisted in the search, told officers Rosenberg may have dropped some acid before heading into the woods on his hike.

The search and rescue unfolded shortly after 8:30 p.m. when Rosenberg called his mother on his cell phone, told her he broke his leg and that he wasn't really sure where he was. His mother called 911.

That's when Cal Fire firefighters from Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties started combing the hillsides about a mile north of Summit Road in the vicinity of Marty Road. They used high-powered flashlights to search the area, which is dotted with caves and apparently popular with Rosenberg and his friends.

For a while, rescuers were able to talk to Rosenberg on his cell phone as they inched closer, but then the battery to his phone ran low. That's when they called for Tomi the K-9 from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

"It's a darn good thing Nick was on duty with Tomi," said sheriff's Sgt. Robert MacAulay, referring to the dog's handler, Nick Baldrige. "But the way he was pulling Nick down the hill, it would have been faster if we all had skids on our bellies."

It took the dog about 20 minutes to find Rosenberg, who was at the bottom of a ravine.

In all, the rescue cost $5,000 to $10,000, said Finch, adding that a medical helicopter and an ambulance had to stand by while the search and rescued ensued.

Baldrige said no charges would be filed against Rosenberg because the Sheriff's Office was "solely there" for search and rescue purposes.

"If there are any financial repercussions from this, it's going to come out of his hide first," said Mark Rosenberg, Matthew's father.

He said his son is a straight A student, and that Monday night's experience went "way beyond what he expected. It's a life-changing experience for him."

this is one reason hallucinogens are illegal, stupid high school students who underestimate the power of the drug.

That was the first thing that came to my mind when I read that. Someone here recently was talking about an upcoming first trip and described such an area to do it in. I can't even begin to remember which thread though.
