Im finally building a flow hood
    #8343546 - 04/29/08 08:32 PM (5 months, 12 days ago)

Ive read for years and years about flow hoods. Ive decided to make one but Im not 100% on what I need to get.

Heres where you come in.

I need, a 12" x 24" HEPA filter (wooden frame). I also need a blower to accomodate this. Im going to be building one like Annos.

I couldnt decided between the 24x24 oro the 12x24 style but I figure 12" is high wnough because I will not be stacking jars.

Anyone who sends me the best links (ie lowest prices) wins a print of their choice.

THANK YOU! You guy will LOVE this box when Im done with it.

I am interested in some good links too. I've heard filtersrx.com has good prices on filters, but it looks like their site is under construction and has been for some time. All the other sites I find seem to cater to businesses and not the average Joe that just wants a single filter. Stamet's site seems a bit pricey. Ebay is hit-or-miss and I have yet to find a good deal on the size I need.

Pay a little extra and get the bigger filter! It's like buying a car. Your going to be stuck with it for a while. You would probably be more happy with a 24 *18 or a 24*24. You'll be more comfortable with the head room. Also the price jumps the most when you go from 24wide to 36 wide. So going up as far as you can to 24 wide is more cost efficient. Take the extra week of work and save another 50 buck for it. You will be more happier in the long run.

I am building this so I can try TVs slurry method so I will need head room for pouring the mix. Im just concerned about a 24x24 one taking so much space, but the 12x24 being too small.

I think that tilting the jar to pour in the slurry would work but im just not sure. Links to all HEPAs are appreciated... like FooMan said, "most sites dont cater to the average joe"

Not that the price is bad compared to some other places, but when you add the actual cost of materials, I'd say you're not getting what you paid for.

I'm looking for a 12x24 myself. I guess 18x24 would work too.

I couldn't have made one..But, I really can't work with power tools ie saws...You don't have to match the fan to the Hepa...........All I had to do was to hook up the fan to a switch..

I get the whole convenience thing and I know you have a bad back too. Back on topic though, does ANYONE have a link to a good place that sells HEPA filters to the average joe at a decent price besides ebay?

I'm going to try THIS out for now. I have the same Holmes model already and a glovebox to attach it to. In addition to FF saying it works, Workman agreed in one of the links FF had in that same post. If those 2 say it will work, I've got to give it a try. It would definitely save me a ton of money.

The thing I notice about the people who say it won't work is that they've never actually tried it. They are basing their opinion strictly on the fact that there isn't laminar flow. FF and Workman have both used it and say it works. Who am I going to believe, people who don't think it will work or people who know it does?
