An ongoing Gainesville Police Department investigation identified a laboratory in a house one mile from the department that is possibly used to grow hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Responding to a fight early Sunday morning at 2501 NW 6th St., Gainesville Police discovered drug paraphernalia at the location, said Lt. Steve Weaver.
Upon searching the residence, police noticed a strange room.
"The total inside of the room was covered in plastic sheeting and had laboratory type items in it, like, safety equipment and jars," Weaver said.
Both Gainesville Fire Rescue's hazardous materials unit and Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, were called to investigate.
"Not knowing what it was, and the suspect not telling us what it was, we had to treat it as a hazardous materials incident," Weaver said.
He said that evidence is pointing towards the room being used as a "clandestine psilocybin mushroom operation."
Psilocybin mushrooms, which grow naturally in the wild, are illegally used as a drug that when ingested causes hallucination.
Street slang for the drug is shrooms.
Weaver said that because there is an ongoing investigation police were requesting not to release the name of the suspect arrested.
