Cordyceps cultivation
    #8335303 - 04/27/08 07:32 PM (5 months, 8 days ago)

Good morning. I am Leow from Malaysia. My hobby is to cultivate the edible mushrooms. Recently, I am try to cultivate Cordyceps militaris in my laboratory. Initially, the extension of mycelia are well growing but there was some limitation to reach fruiting stage. Even primodia, it also could not be found in my sample. Is it caused by the strain problem or others?
Could you give me some hints on how to solve this problem. Thanks!

Dude those things are so creepy. What if they evolved to be able to possess humans like they do ants?? We'd be mindlessly climbing to the top of trees while a mushroom grew out of our heads spreading it to the other people who looked on at the freakish sight...whoa.. :p

Sorry. . .It is a incredibly sci-fi freaky life form though.

I don't know of any cordyceps growers that even attempt to grow the fruits, since the mycelium has the same medical benefits. I've grown the mycelium on grains and insect agar, but haven't ever had fruits.

Try to grow with the same procedure from others strains and see what happens. if you'll rech the same results, isn't a problem of strain at the 70%.

I haven't experiences with them but i believe the only way to produce those mushrooms is to give as food the mycelium to the insects..but yes...it's really a cruel thing.

Does Aloha med offer the cultures? I know you repped that comp a long time ago... But I was on the site the other day and only noticed a selection of oyster cultures on the list.

Well, thanks for your comment anyway. I've tried several ways to get the fruit. At the moment, i used rice and grain. Before, I tried insects and superworms, the mycelia grew with strength, but also hardly to get the fruit. My sample source is from a culture bank. It might be guess that the culture is isolated from the conidia as compared to ascospores.

Cordyceps has many anamorphs. In fact, DNA testing has shown that some strains of penicillium are anamorphs of cordyceps.

Alaho medicinals does not sell cordyceps cultures. Tablets from the mycelium are their bread and butter.

Here's a C militaris we found last fall in Washington State and cloned. Research is ongoing.

I use anywhere from 18 to 30 live crickets per liter of agar mix. Any other insect could probably be used, but crickets are easy to get and work well. Just blend them up into the water and agar-agar before sterilization.

OK I was looking this up before and found a paper on how to grow them but I cant find it any more.

It was pretty much where they would get bunch of larva and they would use a hair thin needle to poke them with a infected needle. They would cover them in a blanket and leave them in a basket. Every so often you take out the dead ones.

I really wish I could find the paper but I looked all over
