Hello all, found this interesting mushroom growing on wood(tree stump, roots) loclly here in sydney.
-Fairly large, length of largest 15cm, the smallest only about 3 or 4cm. Cap between 3 10 cm in diameter and convex. -Stem was quite solid(although many had been eaten by bugs) - Colour was orange, with a yellow/orange stem. Flesh light yellow. Cap was dry and had scale like things...are they fibrils? - spore print was orange/brown - The gills orange brown - And the younger ones had this veil like thing protecting the gills, this was left in a ringon the stipe of the older ones, and it was Orange/brown.

Gymnopilus junionus is active, however they are not widely consumed due to tase/high dosage amounts,
Quote:
DOSAGE FOR WOOD CHIP SPECIES Psilocybe australiana Gymnopilus spectabilis, now considered a synonym of Gymnopilus junonius requires a dosage of 4 to 8 fresh ounces (112-224 gm fresh). According to mycologist Roy Watling, the Australian `form' is probably Subs. pampeanus. However, this mushroom is very bitter and it is most likely not consumed in Australia for recreational use.

Preserve them by drying under a fan for 24-36hrs, until they are cracker dry. Weight should be 1/10th of original fresh amount (roughly). Place in airtight containers. You can also keep fresh mushrooms in paper bags in the fridge for around 4 days. Enjoy

cheers mate. there is a few of them around where i live. Are there any deadly lookalike species in Australia? I could only find refernces to vaguely similiar species in the us called Jack-o-Lantern mushrooms, which are more uncompfortable then deadly. I also vaguely remember reading on the web that drying causes laughing jims to lose all their potency, if thats the case can i freeze them? cheers

Did they bruise blue/green? I noticed on the ones that I found slightly bruised bluey/green on the cap but not on the stem and were found on the base of a tree just as in your picture.

You summed it up perfectly...
If you do try the gyms, make sure you drop back and let us know in this thread whether they were active - I dont think its been reported in Oz before, as far as I know.
