A classic from the legendary Japanese series...
this is easily the episode which garnered the most talent outside of the Iron Chef World Cup.
Pierre Gangierre, 3 Star Michelin Chef takes on Hiroyuki Sakai in the second battle.
the video provides links from part 1 to part 10.
Joel Robuchon is one of the judges.

the old iron chef was so much better. i used to love coming home late night and watching that show when i was a line cook. too bad they dont show it anymore the new iron chef is cool and all, but the level of competition seemed so much higher on the old show. plus weirder/more exotic ingredients.

i agree about the level of competition.
In the old series, they regularly managed to get top ranked chefs or winners of international gourmet competitions.
I really miss the back stories behind the ingredients and challengers, the production value was just so much better than the American version.

Do you really think the Secret Ingredients are really secret?
I have my doubts.
People always seem to have menus in mind and strange ingredients and cookware ready to go.
I think they must give them a heads up, at least the type of food it will be.

well you gotta realize its a taped show, so when they announce the secret ingredient, they do it in a few takes. so by the time they got it right, the competors have already had a little while to start formulating ideas. plus i believe that most chefs who enter "kitchen stadium" already have a basic idea of the courses they want to serve (ie: soup, salad, main course, pasta, etc...) so once you have the secret ingredient, its just a matter of incorporating that ingredient into your pre-conceived dish.
as far as them knowing far in advance.. nah i think they're on the up and up about that. i could be wrong though.

ha I don't know about the fairness of that judging really. Listening to what the French judges said, and then looking at the scores they gave, eh...seemed like they knew who they wanted to win the day before

they get to know three possible ingredients beforehand
which is fair enough, the chefs still need to formulate 18 possible recipes.

I think I read that in the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Chef
Quote:
Before the actual taping, the chefs are given a short list of possible themes, allowing the producers of the show to get any ingredients that may be needed.

I Iron Chef
-------------------- I must not Fear. Fear is the mindkiller . Fear is the little-death that
brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and
through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. ONLY I WILL REMAIN.
