Kansas morel season in full swing (more pictures added)
    #8324456 - 04/24/08 07:55 PM (5 months, 19 days ago)

The first two pictures are M. semilibera. The one on the left was taken two weeks ago, the photo to the right is the same mushroom today.

The mushrooms in the bowl were collected by my father earlier today. He was gloating over them when I dropped by to visit so I was forced to head out to my spots and take pictures. I didn't pick any as I'll be taking a few friends out in a day or so who don't have access to hunting grounds.

I would imagine the mushrooms photographed only represent a tiny sliver of the total growing here at "the farm" -- by no means did I take pictures of every mushroom I saw so.... AWESOME!!... hope they survive the next few days.

Of course Mr. Ornate Box Turtle was posed for the picture.

I wonder, but think its kinda doubtful. Maybe they are a secret vector. I do remember reading that this species of tortoise eats fungi among other things.

Incidentally, this is the state reptile in Kansas, maybe Sufjan Stevens will write a song about it. :igor:

You can't see from the photo, but it looked as though he had survive some major trauma as his shell was deformed in the back, so I don't mind sharing a few mushrooms.

Aww poor fellow. Probably a car or a dog. Glad he survived, hopefully he is immune to the chemicals that make morels toxic when eaten raw. I forget what the chemical was, but it might have been gyromitrin. I know that's in Gyromitra, obviously, but i can't recall if that was the same chemical in morels....

I think it's monomethylhydrazine isn't it?.... or it's in the form of gyromitrin in the mushroom but body converts it to MMH when ingested.

Mr. Ornate Box Turtle won't eat any morels... at least that particular one won't... because I had him for supper. Yeah that's right!

Well, that's another chemical found in Gyromitra, though I'm not sure which chemicals have been found in Morchella. They may be the same, as they are relatives, but I'm having a hard time finding info on morel toxicity, because every page just keeps talking about the "poisonous look-a-likes!" They mention that morels are toxic when eaten raw, but they don't describe why. It's probaby one or more of the same chemicals.

interesting how turtles eat mushrooms around there , they are a well vector of spreading spores, since they also make holes and frecuent humid places or soil they put spores under great places to germinate, hmm interesting , however this tourtuise may not do it againg .lol. .

nice pictures and goos spceimen they really look tasty ,
how people rate morchella the best mushrooms they have eat, or close to the best mushroom?.

I honestly don't know if any of the tortoise or turtle species eat mushrooms -- no definitive evidence of this has ever presented itself to me. I didn't really eat the poor little creature, they have enough problems with automobiles.

Insofar as morels receiving such high culinary praise, I think the reason is two fold.

Firstly, people generally lack much experience with eating wild mushrooms (or anything wild for that matter). They are certainly tasty, but there are several preferable species in my opinion -- I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Secondly, morels are harbingers of spring. In many parts of the Midwest the morel season generally coincides with the first weeks of truly comfortable weather... after months of gloomy frigid cold. Morel hunter love to frolic as much as fill their pots...

Maybe I'm incorrect, but it seems a plausible hypothesis at least.

Someday I wanna go morel hunting with you and hopefully get covered in ticks.

You shouldn't live out east, you'd like it here in California far better. You'd fit right in. Let me know if you ever plan a trip out west so I can alert Alan to get the truck ready and kidnap you to drag on horrible mushroom missions.

MMmmm, morels.

Fit in better in California?Perhaps, but I'm too socially awkward to fit in anywhere other than with organisms like fungi and ticks -- that's why I live in the middle of nowhere. But I am long due to visit family in California. I'm always down for a mushroom mission... can we wear costumes?

So there was a "trespasser" in the morel patch a couple hours ago... it felt weird having to take on the role of the jerk and confront the guy. The whole time I was thinking about the cool stuff I find while trespassing... like 95% of all the mushrooms I've ever found haahaa

Imagine a bunch of socially awkward individuals all deciding that they didn't care anymore, and getting together to chill. Yeah, it's a little unnerving at first, but you soon realize that each persons concept of "normal" is so far from the usual that you can say or do almost anything (be yourself if you want, or act), and no one bats an eye. That's been my experience anyway.

As far as not fitting in, Alans friend tells people that I am not a person, but a mushroom, referring to my myco obsession and poor social skills. He also tends to wear a tail, so who can you really believe?

Costumes?? Oh, you'd fit right in...

Thanks Scyrusurcys

Here are more photos from this morning in my front yard... as opposed to the previous photos... which were taken in my back yard. The area in these photos seemed devoid of mushrooms in years past, in 2004 morel wash water was distributed throughout the area, last year I found a few, this year there seems to be way more.

Of course I can't be certain pouring the wash water had anything to do with these springing up. However I do know the water was full of spores because samples were checked with a microscope.
