I got a lame form response from Kirsten Gillibrand's office (D-NY). Medical marijuana wasn't even my central point. Guess I should call and explain myself more clearly...
Quote:
Thank you for contacting me about making marijuana easily accessible for medicinal use. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved medical marijuana as a safe drug, therefore, I believe this issue must be studied further.
I believe it is essential for patients to receive the safest, and best possible, pain reliever when suffering from chronic pain. Currently, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is researching the effects of smoking medical marijuana as a pain reliever, and I am encouraged that the FDA has approved Marinol, a prescription drug that contains synthetic THC. Marinol has proven effective in helping patients relieve nausea and loss of appetite problems.
In Congress, I will continue to watch this issue, and I will keep your thoughts in mind. Thank you again for contacting me about this issue, and I hope that you keep in touch with my office regarding any future concerns you may have.

That is a standard reply letter the office used, they didn't have one specific to your issue, so instead of actually writing a reply they used a standard MM issue reply letter.
I get those all the time.

E-mailed my representative and called to let them know what's up. I then sparked a joint and thought to myself...this shit is going to get worse before it gets better...
Then I found out about some folks in my town that got raided and busted with 80ish plants after the police got called on a dog incident and smelled it next door, so they claim. Also witnessed a friend get busted for herb in a convenience store parking lot across the street from a local bar that same day. He was pulled over on supposed traffic violation and then intimidated enough to allow search and incriminated himself...
How can we be rid of ignorance when so much of our "law" is rooted in it?

Thank you for emailing and taking your time to contact your rep. about this.
IMO the ignorance lies in the victims of police that take advantage of the majority of drug offenders that do not know their rights. My opinion is for people to educate themselves on the subject. That would help for now, until these unconstitutional laws can be repealed.

Yeah I definitely agree that most of the time many encounters with police can be handled much better if the suspect is knowledgeable about his/her own inalienable rights, and it is their responsibility to know these things.
If only our keepers of the peace were taught to respect those rights instead of learning ways in which to circumvent them.

This is the reply I got...
Quote:
Thank you for contacting me in support of loosening the federal laws on marijuana possession. It is good to hear from you.
On this issue we will have to agree to disagree. I believe that the federal government must take a strong stand in opposition to all illegal drugs, including marijuana. In addressing the drug problem, the federal government must work in concert with state and local governments, which have primary jurisdiction over this issue. We must continue to stop drugs before they reach the country, while they are in the country, and after they have caused addiction. We cannot win this war against crime and drugs without a comprehensive plan.
Several years ago, I was successful in obtaining a Drug Enforcement Administration field office in Rockford. At the time, it was the first to be opened in three years. In addition, retired Judge Al Penniman of my Rockford office serves as my personal liaison to the different community-based anti-drug coalitions in the Sixteenth Congressional District. Of course, much work remains to be done to keep our kids, schools and communities drug-free.
Thanks again for contacting me. Best wishes.
P.S. Communicating with the people I represent is very important to me. If you would like to stay informed of my activities in Congress, please visit http://manzullo.house.gov and sign up for my email updates. You can register to receive my e-newsletter, all my news releases, and updates on various issues.

maybe never, legislative process is circuitous, and all commitie(s) decide on the thing first. If killed there, it will never be presented to the house.
Irregardless, its good a bill like this is finally being proposed, and hillarious you've got Barney Frank and Ron Paul as cosponsers on anything.
This is a step in the right direction, an opporutnity for folks to voice their opinions on these matters, and let their reps know they really care enough to actually contact them about it. Raises the legitimacy of the idea.
Here's the status, you can check yourself though w/ the bill number.
H.R.5843 Title: To eliminate most Federal penalties for possession of marijuana for personal use, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Rep Frank, Barney [MA-4] (introduced 4/17/2008) Cosponsors (1) Latest Major Action: 4/17/2008 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.ALL ACTIONS:
4/17/2008: Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned. 4/17/2008: Referred to House Judiciary 4/17/2008: Referred to House Energy and Commerce
Here's what ol' Frank has to say bout it. What's funny is that he's pushing state's rights for this issue. When a politician starts endorsing positions opposed to his prior advocacy, you know there's some bullshit around. If you're for state's rights you've gotta take the good w/ the bad, and not micromanage:
FEDERAL LAW IS BEHIND THE TIMES
The federal government should remove the current conflict with state law and allow states to decide on these matters for themselves. Eleven states have laws that significantly reduce penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana,1 in many cases providing for a mere civil fine.
Federal law should reflect the reality of the circumstances. Approximately 99% of marijuana arrests happen at the state and local level. Aside from a few isolated instances, the federal government generally does not arrest, prosecute, or even fine people for possession of “small amounts” of marijuana.
Law enforcement agencies should focus on the real criminals anyway. Given continuing special agent shortages at the DEA and the abiding threat of the violent criminal drug trade at the border, our scarce resources should be spent where they are most needed.
WHAT THE BILL WILL NOT DO
It would not affect federal laws prohibiting the sale of marijuana for profit, import and export of marijuana, or manufacturing (cultivating) marijuana.
It would not legalize major drug dealing or create obstacles for agents of the federal government seeking to prevent major drug dealing.
It would not affect any state or local laws and regulations.
It would not alter the legal status of marijuana as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 801 et. seq.).
The states are: California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Oregon.
