And yes, it's a real bill. Not a hoax. Funny that it went to committee so close to 4/20.

From StopTheDrugWar.org:Quote:
Last month, Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) announced he would file a bill to decriminalize marijuana possession at the federal level. Wednesday, Frank followed through, introducing the "The Personal Use of Marijuana By Responsible Adults Act of 2008," which would set a maximum $100 fine under federal law for possession or not-for-profit transfer of less than 100 grams of marijuana. Frank did not comment publicly this week on the proposed legislation, but in a statement last month on his marijuana legislation, Frank said it was a waste of federal time and resources to prosecute minor marijuana offenses.
"I think it is poor law enforcement to keep on the books legislation that establishes as a crime behavior the government does not seriously wish to prosecute," he said. "For highly-trained federal law enforcement agents to spend time prosecuting people for smoking marijuana is a diversion of scarce resources from their job of protecting public safety."
Marijuana laws should be left to the states, he suggested. "The norm in America is for the states to decide whether particular behaviors should be made criminal. To make the smoking of marijuana one of those extremely rare instances of federal crime -- to make a 'federal case' out of it -- is wholly disproportionate to the activity involved. We do not have federal criminal prohibitions against drinking alcoholic beverages, and there are generally no criminal penalties for the use of tobacco at the state and federal levels for adults. There is no rational argument for treating marijuana so differently from these other substances."
Even if the Frank bill were to pass, which seems unlikely any time in the near future, it would have limited impact on the 800,000-plus marijuana arrests each year since the vast majority of them are made by state and local law enforcement. But it would send a very strong signal to the states that the federal government no longer considered pot-smoking a serious problem worthy of the criminal justice system.

It's a good move. Certainly better than no effort.
Still it's funny how the proposal says we should be able to have it but not get it. lol
Quote:
It would not affect federal laws prohibiting selling marijuana for profit, importing and exporting marijuana, or cultivating marijuana.
How the hell would one come to legally possess it?
Nevermind that for now though. One step at the time if that's the way it's gotta be. Better than no step at all.

When have you known government to move at lightning speed? This legislation was just drafted and introduced within the last 24 hours. Some matters can be discussed in congress for months, even years before being put up for vote. Then again, some matters can be put up for vote much sooner. That is why it is important to show strong support from the beginning. Let our representatives know that their constituents are actively engaged in politics and which politics we are supporting.
I atleast sent the email last night and I may give a call to my state rep. office this afternoon. I was just curious if there was a date it was set to be vote on. I will be keeping an eye on this to see where it goes.

I've emailed my representative asking for his support. I'm a little disheartened about the fact that it's Steve Kagen though, because he's been known to vote anti-decriminalization before.

It's great that there is a dialogue starting, but realistically, even Rep. Frank says he doesn't think the bill will pass, he pretty much submitted it "because he could".
We'll see what happens I guess. I'm always hopeful.

Although Ron Paul won't get the nomination, the movement's use of the internet, and the vocal RP following, have forever changed the face of politics. I suspect online campaigns directed towards politicians are going to hold a bit more weight than they used to. Probably more out of greed than fear, but in the end, it doesn't really matter why. Not enough to make a difference here, yet, but when compared to twenty years ago, we are making progress.

I wrote, will call Monday. I even printed out a copy and took it to the campaign office of the candidate running for my district supervisor; both the candidates do not want to take a stand on any issues in this area, and I really wish to sway one to the right side. ...... did all this stoned - I got a prescription
I am going to make a flier over the weekend and make a but-load of copies and pass them out at my college, and everywhere else. I am going to the MJ march on 3 may in SF and will pass them out there too (I'm sure I will not be the only one).
If someone could help me making a flier that would be great. I need a list of all the reps in Cali. If some one could point me in the right direction that would be great. Also if you can give me some ideas on what else to put on the flier.

This bill literally means nothing because the feds don't pick up small personal use marijuana cases and they sure don't investigate them.
It's like saying stop doing what you're not doing.
I doubt many states will follow this lead but I'll put in 100% and email, fax and call my local representative.

The thesis that I want to advance today is that the drug war and the laws that prohibit the private consumption of certain drugs are unconstitutional. Prohibition laws, themselves, violate every tenet of limited government that is embodied in our Constitution.

come on chemy, w/ all the news you read I'd imagine you're familiar w/ one of the most common defense of abrogating local marijuana laws "the feds don't allow it". The city/county in california that didn't want to issue cards sued for an injunction (I think it was them) based on this, some michigan petition is being challenged by opponents claiming it was bad policy to violate federal law....
Think man, they use this constantly to buttress their own laws, adn to rebuke reform efforts... In some cases going so far as to seek federal injunctions against the enforcement of citizen enacted initiatives on the basis of federal laws..
