I've not smoked in years. Not that I won't ever again, but I think it helps to have non potheads stand up for this shit. People seem surprised when I talk to them that I support legalization of drugs.... Guess they were expecting a hobo.

With how quickly this movement has gained momentum just within the past 2-3 years I don't really think it's possible that marijuana won't be legalized in the near future.

If you insist...
Seriously though-- it was criminalized on racist and panicked terms in the first half of the 20th Century; by the second half the original framers were dead or dying and no one really understood what they'd inherited and things got seriously out of control.
By now, I'd like to think we know better. Enough people use, have used, or know people that use and think there is a better way.
I think more people should insist on decriminalization-- the time is certainly ripe. Within our lifetimes-- WHY NOT?
let me rephrase..
i strongly suspect that this go around it won't pass
regardless though, I think its a great step in the right direction.

I'm all over this. I just sent a message and a shitload of emails out with the link. It's about time this bullshit ends. Even if it doesn't pass, the more we remind politicians that there are millions of us who want weed to be legalized, the more open they will become to the idea. Lets face it, they don't give a shit about anything but votes. If enough voters tell them to legalize weed, sooner or later it will become a reality.

leave a message you potheads!
You don't even have to talk to the rep's staff, as they're all home now. Just call the capital, tell the operator your rep's name, the site will give it to you- ya apolitical bastard, and you'll get his answering machine after a buncha rings.
And change the message. It means more if you don't send in the set script.

I did my part, and to the 2nd poster, marijuana has been decrimalized in many cities already. I oculd see it happening in our lifetimes, or at least see the punishments drastically lowered. Although if you get a lawyer all you get is a fine usually anyway.

Send this message to friends and family to FEDERALLY DECRIMINALIZE MARIJUANA! [H.R. 5843] [Re: Dizzwizzle]

Here is an email message I composed for my family and (more conservative) associates. Feel free to use it when soliciting others for support.
Quote:
For the first time in 24 years, a new bill was proposed today that would end the federal authority to arrest adults for marijuana possession, in effect leaving this decision to individual states, just as it had been for 161 years up until 1937. This bill [H.R. 5843 - The Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008], was introduced by US Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) and co-sponsored by presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), and seeks to eliminate all federal penalties prohibiting the personal use and possession of up to 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of marijuana. Under this measure, adults who consume cannabis would no longer face arrest, prison, or even the threat of a civil fine. The bill also eliminates all penalties for the not-for-profit transfers of up to one ounce of pot. The bill incorporates the basic recommendations of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (also known as the Shafer Commission), which was implemented by Richard Nixon, but the scientific results and recommendations of which Nixon chose to ignore. Instead he promoted one of the longest, most expensive and socially damaging wars - a war on the American public - the War on Drugs. If you believe as I do, that the federal government has no business prohibiting an individual's right to choose what they put into their bodies (particularly when that substance is proven to cause less physical and social harm than other commonly enjoyed substances such as alcohol), I urge you to take just a moment to write and call your representative on this matter. It will only take a few minutes, and your voice is important!
Then call the capital switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and ask the operator to connect you to your representative (you may give the operator your zip code and they will find your rep for you if you don't know their name). Once connected to your representatives office, you can say something to the effect of:
My name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town, your state]. I wanted to ask my representative to please support Barney Frank's Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act. Thank you for hearing me out, and please feel free to forward this message to any and all potentially receptive peoples.

Don't let THE FEAR paralyze you from creating positive change my friend! In the least, send the message out to other friends and family who may be willing to contribute.
For what it's worth, I have been calling, writing emails and hard letters, to my representatives and congresswomen, the President, and various other executives in government for many years, always including my legal name and address, and have never been harassed on account of these political actions.

imagine a stainless steel sphere the size of the earth..and a mosquito landing on it once every million years...after the sphere has been completely eroded away by friction..we will not be one microsecond closer to the day when the penalty for MJ possession is even reduced.. let alone decriminalized...so dont hold your breath waiting to inhale...

to all those saying this will not happen are crazy. Some states have already adopted this method. Its like a domino effect. I know for a fact that if the state I'm in proposes this then i will be smoking a blunt on my porch tonight....
but honestly 87% of college students both smokers and non smokers favor the decriminalization of pot. being are next generation to vote I'd say just sit back and wait.

Good enough! The only thing that has ever happened when I've emailed my politicians about stuff like this is that they send a letter saying "Dear voter yada, yada, yada I appreciate your opinion yada, yada, yada". No cops or anything.
