hey guys first time posting, went on a hunt with a mate today, looking for p.subs, no luck , but what we did find was alot of these which are maybe amanita muscaria. maybe someone experienced could chime in and help us out?
they were growing amongst pine needles, and other eucalypt trees close by. there was alot of other mushrooms not sure on which species, none appear to bruise blue. eastern victoria

Yeah they're a.muscaria, all of them. Keep only the red skin and yellowish fleshy stuff, and the little white chunks on top, dry in oven at approx 100 degrees for about half hour, (can cook higher but might burn which makes the taste quite horrible), stick the (hard) dried bits in the blender, then find a way to get that down! Might have to hold your nose... haha... whatever you do don't mix it with any foods. It does NOT make a good soup ingredient!

ok well i had some shrooms last night (i didn't find them) and they didn't do anything at all!! i was told to eat 2 or 3 so i ate 3 not the stems though wasn't 100% sure if i could. Yeah nothing happened all night so i just got tipsy, didn't have enough booze cos i thought i won't drink much if i have a few shrooms haha ah well.
Anyway found a spot yesterday, pretty sure there actives but, i've got some doubts so i'm gonna post some pics up. Has anyone heard subs go by the name golden tops before?








Ok there's no blueing, there's more orange instead so that's were i'm thinking that they aren't subs, and the biggest one there wasn't found in the same area as the smaller ones but kind of close. but yeah what do you guys think?

Woo, such pretty amanitas, also i think the red-orange ones are strophs(stropharia auranitica), they have the sub shape but wont do anything besides give you a nasty belly ache, but i couldnt tell you for certain, they dont look active to me though.

Hey guys, nice thread here, not to mention the site!
Todays my first hunt for the season... no actives (I dont think!), but I did find the following;
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
Images 1-4 came from one area, 5 came from the area seen in 10, images 6-8 were from a patch of over 40 similar LBMs, and 9s just another random.
Any thoughts on these being good indicator LBMs?

Golden Tops are Subs in Victoria and Cubensis in some other parts of the country. But in Victoria Gold Tops are Subs.
Those shrooms in your pics are Stropharia A's. Not for human consumption, but I think you know that.
Also, you can eat the stems man. The active ingredient is found in stems (why they bruise blue). 3 or 4, if not fresh or poorly stored and without the stems, are not sufficient for the effects to be noticeable. Try 5 to 6 with stems and proceed with care (this means: DO NOT MIX WITH ALCOHOL). Others may debate this but if you're just new to tripping try not to mix it.

jonnydrama, the effects of Amanita's are unpredictable and can be difficult. You need to get out and look for Subs. Notorious posted some pics of his finds on this thread, scroll though and check it out.

Scantraxx - you have strophs there. Be careful who you get your shrooms off, I used to think I knew what I was doing with shrooms but I had absolutely no idea.
crixyd - Nice pictures, what camera setup are you using?
jonnydrama - Some better pictures of those shrooms in your last picture would be good. Don't just go on bruising, post some pictures and a spore print before you dismiss them. You might lose a good night or two.

Images 5 6 7 and 8 are good inactive indicators, no idea about the others though, sorry.

Thanks mate, its a Canon 20d with Canon 50mm 1.8 II, and the EF25 II extension tube for the macros.
Would I be right in saying 5 thru 8 are Stropharia A's, as can be seen in Scantraxxs' pics also? You mentioned they are a good indicator species (thx for the reply , would anyone have any idea weather they normally fruit before subs? or are there just too many variables (im guessing so!).

hello all, i went out picking 2day for the first time, by myself, just wanna say with out all of ur input on this site i would not know a thing, as i don't know anyone to take me. i found some Amanita Muscaria, i can see "pins" around the bottom off trunks in pine plantations. i found other mushrooms from what i have read and tried pore prints ruled them out, taking into account i am new.

i read somewhere between 1-4 medium size..
i started off with 2 grams dryed yesterday , i feel asleep my gf is trying 4 grams dryed now.. see how it go's..

Nice setup.
Most likely, that or Leratiomyces ceres. I'm way too seedy to check them out properly at the moment.
Strophs generally show that the local area is about to start fruiting goodies. So yes, they fruit before subs. Subs by Monday...

Thanks very much Alan, its great to have a better understanding of the mycological diversity in my area, as opposed to just going hey an LBM! Would you recommend any books which are good guides for mycological study relevant to melbourne/australia? I would like something that is far more expansive than just actives. Cheers.

I like A.M. Young's A Field Guide to the Fungi of Australia, UNSW Press (2005). Good detailed descriptions, but a lot of black/white drawings. This in combination with another local guide that has more colour photos would be great.
I'm splitting hairs here but number 4 if it has jet black spores, i've called them "Psathyrella bipellis" in the past, not sure if that's correct but it also fits the description.
