Australia - Melbourne Season 2008
    #8285584 - 04/15/08 03:52 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

G'Day Melbournites,
I'm a long time lurker, 1st time poster.
I thought it would be wise to use my 1st post to start a fresh thread on the 2008 Melbourne season, so as to bury the old thread like some people wanted (with the 3 pages of junk)
I'm very excited and enthusiastic about finding Subs this season.
I started the hobby last August looking around the SE suburbs. I never found any, but I may have started a bit too late.
Please message me if anyone knows if the Churchill / Police Paddocks areas are worth searching.
Wish me luck :-D
Happy hunting

Yes, August is generally too late. I find the season peaks in late June. Good luck!

I can't believe people are already finding Gold Tops around Melbourne. It seems at least two weeks premature, especially with the lack of rain this year.

Yeah they do. I was up near Somers and a friend and I went for a bike ride through the lovely country side. We thought we would go looking in the cow paddocks and we found little pins popping up all over the poop.
So they do grow in paddocks. Just look around!

LOL yes mushrooms do grow in cow pats. Amazing discovery! Shroomkma is saying is that magic mushrooms don't grow in cow paddocks in Melbourne.

Edit: Agreed.. the main two actives that grow from cow dung in Australia are Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens and both of those mushrooms find Victoria too cold - you find them from NSW and QLD on the east coast. As far as i know there are no active dung mushrooms in Victoria at all.

I know that he is saying exactly that. If by Melbourne he meens the CBD or close to it then i apologise. But Somers is not that far out. Just past mornington.

I dont think i have even seen paddocks in melbourne.
Anyway, it doesnt matter, lets not polute this thread like the other 2008 one was. Sorry yall

Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve, its not a paddock.
Its part of Churchill National Park & Lysterfield Lake Park.
I have only seen in-actives there.
But hopefully I may see something else there soon, as its much closer to me than Ringwood/Blackburn where most of yoou guys seem to find yours.

They grow all over the place here in melbs. Best bet is to look in your local parks and reserves and check the mulch beds. The Melways is always handy for this.
I'm shore just about anyone can find them within 5-10ks from home

Went for a walk today and the patches I frequent are still a couple of weeks away, I am amazed that people are making such good finds this early.

Kelly666
Be patient, May is the best time to start looking and it might take a while to find ya 1st one's but once you do they will start appearing all over the place you just need to know what ya looking for. Follow the advice on here and as stated above look in local Parks in landscaped/woodchipped beds and you should strike gold! I have even found them in woodchip/Mulch at a Local Shopping centre carpark.
You dont need to look around Ringwood/Blackburn I have found them everywhere from Frankston through to Lilydale up in the Hills and even in Collingwood, they grow in most area's once the season hits full swing.
Remember to post on here ya finds if you are not sure on what you find and most of us are good on ID's
Hope that helps and Good Luck

Yes it is getting extremely close to the break out season, just a bit more rain to infuse with these cold humid nights now.

Kelly666 like the others say, dont worry when you find that very first one, they will start appearing like you'd swear that you had walked over them with out even knowing before.
Like you i once thought it would be hard to find them, i even thought i would never find them, but after exploring alot of different shrooms and habitats i knew what to look for and where to look once the season hit.
Dont bother trying to treck out so far that it puts you out, they do grow very wild and you would be suprised how vastly spores spread over time.
Dandenong i find is quite good, very lush conditions around the forest.
Places to look would be nice mulchy beds, around eucalypt trees are a good go, pine trees nice lush ground with alot of folage, fallen trees/branches, like dense bush area.
I even had a scout today for myself where might be some good places for them to grow.
I would suggest hunting in a few weeks when the cold and rain set in so you wont waste time and possibly count out a great place where they might later grow. And be sure to know what to look for, study some pics before you go looking or even bring a pic with you to ID them.
Anyhow, good luck with your findings, i hope this is of some help to you.
Be sure to post your findings.

Down in tassie things have already started, i have found 3 patchs with maybe 15 decent sized shrooms for the picking... also 100's of pins all poking their pretty heads out of the ground.

my mouth is watering at the thought of just how good this season might be.

I too am constantly on the road with work, and always keep an eye out for lush places, i have a couple of sweet areas out bush in northern vic where they grow Quite big because of the climate and conditions.
Though lately i have been gathering places local where shrooms will be growing.
I cant wait until it hits full swing!
Good Times, Good Times! :dogpile:

I'm going hunting tomorrow around Belgrave/Mt. Dandenong..

That place is covered in all kinds of mushrooms. Will return tomorrow or Saturday to report what I find.

I'm hoping my meager patch turns up something soon.

Just a heads up to anyone in Melbourne who has acid... er... I AM NOT LOOKING FOR ACID, DO NOT PM ME.
