Honestly, I get a little annoyed by the phrase "mind expanding". Like psychedelics just automatically make you more wise. Quite frankly most of the people I see that trip aren't trying to expand shit, they just want to goof off and get high. (I'm guilty of this too)
I think "Mind altering" or "Broadening of Experience" are better phrases than "Mind Expanding"
Drugs don't make you enlightened. Personal inner work makes you enlightened with or without drugs. Some drugs allow you to get more inside yourself that you normally would be able to, but what you do once you are there is totally up to you.
You wouldn't say that a hammer has "house building" qualities...

Does it not?
The key is to work the psychedelic state of mind into your everyday life. Then it is truly a mind expanding substance. If you and your friends are just goofing off and getting "high", then you will most likely never feel the long trailing effects they have to offer.

I completely disagree with you. Psychedelics can be mind expanding in the way that they make you see world in a different way. Before you didn't even know it was possible. You question what is real, you question everything. You can learn about yourself. Lots of people have this experience. I would be a different person if it weren't for psychedelics.

It's different for everyone. Maybe your mind doesn't expand when you use psychedelics, but many people do have the mind expansion experience.

I totally agree. There have been nights I have taken psychedelics and felt no growth. Just a different way of seeing the world; One that Ive seen several times before.
Then there are nights I feel so restless that I jump on my bike in the middle of the night and shoot threw the city going as fast as I can and feel something growing inside my soul.
Or when I grab my telescope and drive out to the country where you can actually SEE the stars. Alone.
My mind was expanded many years ago before I took psychedelics. Psychedelics are just one more weapon in the arsenal of an already expanded mind.

Its how you approach them. If you are just wanting to get high and see stuff, then you might not notice or focus on the other aspects. If you are introduced to their effects correctly then they are very mind expanding. Most of the people I introduced them to saw everything in a new light, revealed as the truth. These drugs will flow to your command if you know how, but of course sometimes they take you for a ride.

with psychedelic, I find
the universe is literally many times bigger, halls of mirrors may go off in every direction.
sound and vision and sensations echo longer in the bigger space.
the tripping out forever which lasts a second is astonishing and very mind expanding all together

regarding the OP, I somewhat agree.
But, many times a trip that was just intended to be mere fun and games can become an intense learning experience seemingly without any conscious intention for "enlightenment" involved, so I don't think the analogy with the hammer and the house fits.
After all, the hammer in the hands of someone who doesn't intend to build a house, its pretty safe to a assume that the house won't get built. But the probability of someone becoming more enlightened during a psychedelic experience, regardless of their purely hedonistic intent, is much more likely. But it's certainly not automatic, or guaranteed...but then again, who knows, maybe it is a little bit. I don't know. It seems to boil down to a "chicken or egg" problem.

haha I was saying this the other day...I think that the words have just become cliche almost, and it has been in parody to long...call it what you want it's your choice, it's your experiences that deem it what it is, who can question another's personal experience??
some people see the experience as getting high and goofing off yes, but that makes you think doesn't it..why don't these people have the visions that you and I do?? maybe these tools are some ancient evil mechanics tricking your brain into falsehood, leading your mind down one of the infinite hallways...powerful magical evil it could be...never leave out the room for possibility because in the infinite that is all there is

I think psychedelics ARE mind expanding unless you really ignore them. Note this doesn't mean it "enlightens" you or puts you above everyone else. It offers you different ways to view things, and lets neurons fire in different paths which will allow you to gain some knowledge and prespective.
BTW I found it interesting that when I tried mescaline it felt literally mind expanding. Like my brain became a holographic image and grew 100x and connected with the world. I honestly felt like my thoughts were "over there". Like behind me, and other people could think them and see them. And that I could share in their thoughts, and the experience of the world and time (it felt like it was the 1200's as well as the 2000's, but it didn't matter because it was the same).
Acid on the other hand made it feel as if I moved a surveillance camera and was able to see things from another angle. Of course it was a lower dose, so I still have a few hundred more experiments to do. But still it felt more movie like, rather than a collection of conciousnesses. And an exchange of thoughts rather than a soup of thoughts.

I think the fact that you experience something that you never thought was truly possible is mind expanding. Mind and intelligence aren't the same thing. Someone who has tripped has expanded their mind to the possibilities of the psychedelic reality. I think mind expanding is a perfectly acceptable term -- it just depends on how you look at it.

You must not be taking the same drugs as me.
even if you dont go into it with the reason of mind expansion. When i was 15 i took acid for the first time. I didnt even realize there were supposed to be many mental effects. My life will never be the same from that day. Years later and a few trips later (on shrooms, not acid. Im still waiting for the right time to do it again. I had a pretty crazy ad trip the first time) i have never gone back to how i was. I was changed for the better, but changed so drastically.
Its just person to person. I have always been a somewhat "deep" kid and usually take drugs for reasons a little more then getting fucked up. I take psychedelics to learn about myself and about life. New concepts even ones i cannot explain i can just understand come from every trip.
I would not be myself if i had never taken psychedelics

You'll find that most people who use psychedelics simply to get fucked up on seem to be the ones who have the worst experiences and try to convince everybody that it was the worst thing that ever happened to them. They'll cease their use and never learn the true value of psychedelics, and most of the time it wasn't even a bad trip, they simply learned things about themselves that they wished they had never learned. I personally know I can have a fun, outgoing trip at parties and shit because I have faced what lies within me and have come to grips with who I am and makes me, me. But on the other hand, I can also have a trip that expands my mind even further simply by having a different set of mind, and being in a different setting.

very true. I think the op has just been using mushrooms with friends and probably hasn't had a solo trip, and I doubt his friends have either.
Mushrooms can be fun and games for a long time, if you do it in groups its hard to have a truly mind expanding experience. sure everyone's laughing and getting tripped out by the most ridiculous shit, but overtime that grows old.
People who start using mushrooms just because its a drug usually get bored, or get scared off.
mushrooms have a way of keeping those around who know how to use them, not abuse them.
Now don't get me wrong, their is nothing wrong with using mushrooms for recreational purposes. Sometimes I have trips to learn, others I just want to kick back.
I'm just saying if you've never dedicated a trip to yourself, and learning the confines of the mind, then you really can't say that it doesn't work.

Well, depends upon the definition of enlightenment. If you're treating enlightenment as the classical mystical experience whereupon your ego and sense of self dissolves into the vast nothingness, and you become One with your surroundings, then drugs definitely can make you enlightened (at least, temporarily). These sorts of ego dissolution experiences have been created via psychedelics, dissociatives, deliriants, meditation, yoga, fasting, sweat lodges, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation, and a whole host of other techniques. The key is what you can bring back from the experience.
A major part of wisdom is in being able to use what knowledge you learn through your various experiences in your life thereafter. A temporary, four hour mushroom trip might bring new and wonderful insights for those four hours, but it's wholly up to that individual who tripped to then apply these to his life. By its very nature, enlightenment as obtained through years of meditation is thus more likely to be permanent than that obtained through drugs, as the sheer level of dedication and hard work necessary for the former makes it more likely the wisdom will "stick."

A hammer definitely has house building qualities, but it also has the potential to do damage. It's all about the intent.
Same thing with acid. Acid has great mind expanding qualities, but it also has "hey look at that trippy shit" qualities.
