I think my back's about ready to go through sympathy spasms for you.
Yikes! I couldn't even attempt to plant a garden without first using a tiller. We have a fine assortment of rocks, red clay, boulders and more clay.
You get extra props from me now Demius.

i actually wish my soil had some rock to it, but it's all rich, dark red/brown topsoil (very little clay, considering middle TN is mostly clay, limestone, and granite)
there was definitely pain the first few days, but i did the not-so-smart thing and kept working through it. i messed my back up last summer, so i know what it's like to barely be able to move for a week, but this shit had/has to be finished

I ask because I thought they were quite the winding vine and worry whether you have given yourself enough room for them. I have thought about trying some melons myself but am worried about time and space. I prefer to have my smaller garden and keep it in good shape than let everything get out of hand. With the little ones around I don't have a huge amount of time I can work it.
You must own your own garden tiller. It's on my list of things to get.
i threw some watermelon seeds into the corner of my old yard when i was younger, they took over the whole damn yard nearly.... had so many watermelons we had to give some away! they grow fast and spread out.

well today i added cubanelle peppers, husky cherry tomatoes and super 100 tomatoes to my garden i also have some pimento and what i believe to be tobasco peppers that have sprouted. oh and i also have some cotton plants that are about 4" tall
i have a question, possibly a3eyedfish could answer it as he is a pepper fan, someone else may know, i recently came across some tepin seeds, which is about a 1/4" and round pepper that grows wild in several places such as mexico and africa, ive read that the seeds need to pass through the digestive tract of a bird before they will germinate...... is there any way i could simulate this to get these seeds to grow?!?!?! i only have about 15 of the seeds and i dont want to fuck it up!

Cuz you like us? I can always find something on the internet, but the conversations here make it a more interesting way to learn things.
As for leafy greens, I really like baby spinach in my salad. Isn't kale cooked like a turnip or mustard green? Or is it more of a salad green?

someone taught me this recipe: heat up olive oil (any oil works) and cook bite sized kale for 10 seconds and make a sandwich. it probably destroys some vitamins but
i've wanted to grow some kale in a 5 gallon bucket on a window sill for a while now. perpetual harvest it all year round
moth: when thinking about lights, you might be able to grow in some east or west facing windows even though they don't get sun all day. the plants will grow slower but the sun is paying the energy bill anyway
