Anyone grow their own food?

How do I start? What are the easiest plants to grow indoors?
Besides mushrooms, I'm a newbie at growing anything. Maybe I should start with kitchen herbs, but I'd like some fruit and veg to consume.

I've been doing some experimenting with an indoor herb garden and have had good luck with basil, dill, chives, and radishes. But I second your question, What are the easiest plants to grow indoors?

Currently growing some herbs (basil and oregano) and hot peppers (habanero, bolivian rainbow, and thai sun) on my kitchen window sill.

Unless you have a grow light or a whole heapin' of direct sunlight, you're not likely to achieve a large yield indoors - which is why things like hot peppers and herbs, typically used in moderation, are perfect for the sitchyation. I aim to start some tomato plants from seed soon. Outdoors I have tangerine, lemon, and orange trees, a pineapple plant, a baby duarte peach tree, a small strawberry patch, a huge rosemary bush, and some chives.
Unfortunately, I also have a resident rambunctious gopher that just loves to tear everything and anything to pieces!

i used to have an herb garden with my ex.. basil, chives, rosemary, thyme, sage, cilantro, italian parsley...
those little aerogardens are cool too. might get one of those for some herbs. too bad they dont grow bud too well. then it could serve a double purpose.

If you have good weather and a balcony, go for tomatoes.
Nothing better than home grown tomatoes.

I grow little basil and rosemary plants on my windowsill. When I had a yard I had a lot of veggies. Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, peas, spinach, and lettuce are some of the easiest and best things to grow, IMO. The best is when you time it well enough that you have a bunch of things ready at the same time, so you can make an entire meal from your garden. Seriously, it's like the most satisfying thing ever. It's also nice if you can plan it so you have some things ready each week, and if you grow hardy enough plants (like kale) they can last well into the winter.

Right now I just have onions.
I have 1 tomato plant but it's not in the ground yet (too early).
This summer I plan on growing tomatoes, onions, squash, zuchinni, cucumbers maybe try some corn, melons and peppers.
This fall I'll grow lettuce, spinach, broccoli and maybe try strawberries again, but didn't have any luck last time. I'd be growing the greens now if I could have gotten my garden tilled in time.

I can see where those containers would be nice, but part of the reason I do this is economical. I love growing my own food, but I also love how much cheaper it is.
When you start container gardening, unless you have a great compost pile (which I don't and know I should) it can get expensive buying all that soil.
But my onions are growing in a planter that wasn't doing anything.

I just read that avocados (which I love right now) can be grown inside without too much trouble.
Fuck, I can't wait until I can get my own place and set up an amazing indoor garden! I'll get the right lights and everything to make this work.

Yep, but they can be grown as a houseplant. However, they won't fruit unless they receive the proper lighting, which should be easy to do with a highpowered light of some type.
