I got back 3x the amount I expected from federal tax return... wtf?
    #8237187 - 04/04/08 06:35 AM (7 months, 27 days ago)

not that I'm complaining, but I'm also pretty sure I'll have to give it back if it was a mistake. If it wasn't a mistake, I'm confused. I did my taxes with TurboTax, and even had a CPA double, and then triple check it. Both said it was fine, low risk for flags, etc.

The total return came to just under $1400. I filed it electronically, and setup a direct deposit. After waiting for about 2 weeks, I finally saw the deposit pending, however it is over $4000.

I'll be calling that CPA again, but I was wondering if anyone here could explain this. Is it common to get overpaid? Could I be getting back some type of taxes I was unaware of? etc.

Roughly 2500 extra, sounds like an earned income tax credit to me.

You will probably receive a written notice that your tax return was revised, thus increasing your total refund. It is likely that something was omitted from the original return, and they caught it. I wouldn't sweat it.

BTW, just a small pet peeve of mine--the $$ you get back is called a tax refund, the forms you turn in to the IRS are called a tax return.

according to this site:
http://apps.irs.gov/app/eitc2007/Forward_Eligibility.do

I am not eligible for EITC due to age (about 6 months shy).

I highly doubt it, I just checked all my credit reports last night coincidentally, and there were no flags or anything that would indicate such a thing (and I have dealt with it before, so I feel like I would know what to look for).

thanks for the comments so far, I'm still a little confused. I'll just make sure not to spend any of the excess until I know why it's there.
