Spring Planting has begun!
    #8230451 - 04/02/08 10:15 PM (5 years, 1 month ago)

Here in zone 7 at least.

So far I've put out blueberry bushes and onions. Hopefully my garden spot will get tilled tomorrow.

Even though it's way too early I just had to buy a tomato plant this week. It's unusual, a cherokee purple (heirloom). Can't wait to see how it does.

What you other dirt lovers up to?

onions should've been out close to a month ago if not more.

i put mine out about 3 weeks ago, and was still a little behind, so instead of doing seed i put out onion sets.  i'll take pics of my little garden tomorrow.  i've got 14 or so broccoli plants, and 7 brussels sprouts plants.  and a whole 4'x10' bed devoted to 5 rows of carrots

right now, though, i'm noticing cabbage aphids and cabbage maggots (adults) on the leaves, and there are some slugs living in the soil.  so tomorrow i am going to go buy some Bt and put out a few saucers of beer to see if that won't solve most of the problem.

i put out a bunch of poppy seeds in the yard this afternoon, but shhhhhh, don't tell anyone .  if they die if/when we have a last good frost, i'll put out the other half i saved back

Yeah my onions have been out for awhile. I've already been eating some tops from them.

I'll try broccoli this fall. My ground isn't ready and it's almost too late now for Spring.

Bt's good stuff. I have never had luck with poppies (damn it!).

Thanks Brainiac, I hadn't thought of that. I do plan on trenching and burying most of the plant when it goes into the dirt. But for now I have to keep it mobile because we aren't done with frost yet.

My potting soil mix

One bag of cow compost shit +one bag of potting soil+ Pre mix and some rare earth
with MycoGrow™ Soluble for Potting Soils & Rooting Media
I plan on coating my seeds with MycoGrow™ Micronized Endo/Ecto Seed Mix.Before starting them in Sunleaves Super Starter Plugs.

BioBizz Pre-Mix (3-3-5) is concentrated with natural fertilizers including brown seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum), composted chicken manure, green kelp, molasses, soybean meal, pre-fermented soy extracts and Vinasse-Kali extract.

Rare earth
is a rich blend of silicon, humates and 72 rare minerals. Blend it with your rooting media, top dress around the plant stem or add it directly to your nutrient solution to develop a protective silicon shield. Silicon improves your plants' resistance to heat and nutritional stresses naturally, deters fungal diseases and reduces insect damage for stronger development and denser, heavier fruit.

I plan on using Guano to feed my plants

Sounds expensive to me.

My dirt will be red clay with aged manure from the pasture and lime.

Say yes to sustainable living.

I've got some squashes(which have about 3 inch fruits) bell pepper(which is kinda growing the slowest), and broccoli. The bee's love to pollinate brocolli flowers.

Peppers are one of the plants I usually buy and grow from plant instead of seed. They take a long time to grow. And they like it hotter for longer than I really have here.

I haven't tried it yet but I've heard squash blossoms are edible. I might try this later when I am already giving away squash and there's more everywhere I look.

Up here at least I plan on there being a frost until "blackberry winter".  The cold snap we get when the blackberries are blooming.  That's like my all clear siren.

It's still below freezing at night here, so no planting yet.  I'm optimistically planning to put in a few plant starts this weekend, but may revise if the weather hasn't warmed up over the next few days.

My broccoli and red chard both over-wintered, though!  The broccoli plant has already produced three sizable harvests since February, and has another "crop" ready to pick soon.

Eventually, I'll be planting crookneck squash, bell peppers, beefsteak tomatoes, bush beans, sweet peas, basil, dill, oregano & cucumbers.

Cool. Peas usually do pretty well in cool weather, maybe not as well as broccoli but about the same as cabbage. Depending on which kind I guess. English peas like it at least.

Last year I planted my sweet peas too late, and they got fried by the heat.

If Wando peas are available to you, they are a little more heat tolerant than others.
